About

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare for PlayStation is a 2001 survival-horror adventure developed by Darkworks and published by Infogrames. The fourth main entry in the long-running Alone in the Dark series, it puts private investigator Edward Carnby back at the center of a new case, while also introducing professor Aline Cedrac as a second playable lead. The PlayStation release arrived in Europe in May 2001 and North America in June, bringing a large, cinematic horror story to the original console.

The investigation begins after Carnby's friend and partner, Charles Fiske, is found dead near Massachusetts's Shadow Island. A mysterious set of ancient tablets has drawn him into the island's history, and Carnby agrees to continue the search. Aline has her own reason to travel there: she believes the island's reclusive Professor Obed Morton may be her missing father. Their aircraft is attacked during the approach, separating the two explorers and sending them into different parts of the foreboding island estate.

At the start of Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare PS1, players choose Carnby or Aline. That choice changes parts of the route and gives each campaign a different emphasis. Carnby's path leans more heavily toward combat, while Aline's places greater focus on puzzle solving; the characters nevertheless cross paths as the two investigations converge. Playing both sides reveals additional scenes and details of the Shadow Island mystery rather than simply repeating one identical journey.

Exploration unfolds through dark forests, a mansion and its surrounding locations, presented through fixed cinematic camera angles and pre-rendered environments. Players search rooms for keys, documents, tools, ammunition and puzzle items, then use those discoveries to unlock the next stretch of the island. Encounters with hostile creatures create a careful balance between advancing the investigation and managing supplies. The PlayStation game is a single-player experience built around deliberate movement, environmental puzzles and a steadily expanding network of dangerous spaces.

Light is one of the adventure's defining ideas. Several of Shadow Island's creatures are vulnerable to illumination, so Carnby and Aline use a flashlight not only to see in the darkness but also to expose details and keep certain threats at bay. Special light-based ammunition, including magnesium bullets and phosphorus shells, extends that concept into combat. Darkworks designed the game so the flashlight could brighten areas and cast shadows across its pre-rendered scenes, making the player-controlled beam an active part of investigation and survival rather than a purely cosmetic effect.

The New Nightmare stands apart from the series' earlier 1920s-set stories with a contemporary 2001 setting and a self-contained continuity. Its unsettling island, branching protagonist perspective and light-versus-darkness mechanics combine mystery-adventure structure with survival-horror tension. Darkworks developed the PlayStation and Dreamcast editions, while related releases appeared on Windows and Game Boy Color; a PlayStation 2 version followed in Europe. For PlayStation players, this edition preserves the game as a distinctive late-era PS1 chapter of Alone in the Dark.
