About
The Simpsons (2 Players World, set 1) is the two-player World arcade configuration of Konami's 1991 side-scrolling beat 'em up based on the animated television series. Developed and published by Konami for coin-operated arcades, it turns a Springfield crisis into a cooperative chase: after Waylon Smithers steals a diamond for Mr. Burns, Maggie ends up with it and is carried off, sending the rest of the Simpson family after her. The “2 Players World, set 1” label identifies this particular international two-player arcade program set, rather than a separate Simpsons game or a later home conversion.
One or two players can choose from Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa. Each family member has a recognizably different basic attack: Homer relies on punches and kicks, Marge swings her vacuum cleaner, Bart brings out his skateboard, and Lisa fights with her jump rope. The cabinet uses an eight-way joystick with dedicated attack and jump buttons, so the immediate task is to move through busy horizontal scenes, strike enemies, evade incoming attacks, and use jumps to negotiate both crowds and hazards. A health gauge absorbs damage, food restores strength, and a depleted gauge costs a life, keeping the arcade pressure on as the pursuit continues.
The two-player version preserves the game’s emphasis on teamwork. Players standing near one another can trigger paired moves, including throws, linked attacks, and family combinations that help clear a packed screen. Loose objects add another layer to the brawling: smaller items can be used against enemies, while especially heavy objects invite cooperation. Credits may be used to continue after a player runs out of lives, and short bonus activities between stages give the action a change of pace. The format makes the game easy to understand at a glance while rewarding partners who stay close enough to assist one another.
Springfield supplies the route and much of the game’s character. The family pushes through locations associated with the show, facing Mr. Burns’s hired opposition and encountering familiar residents and visual gags along the way. Each stage culminates in a tougher confrontation before the chase advances, with the final stretch leading to the nuclear power plant and a showdown involving Smithers and Mr. Burns. The large cartoon-style character art, expressive animation, sampled voices, and appearances by supporting cast members were designed to make the cabinet feel connected to the early television series rather than merely borrowing its name.
Konami released The Simpsons during a period when its arcade beat ’em ups were built around immediate multiplayer play, and the two-player cabinet was one of several arcade configurations made available for the game. Unlike the four-player dedicated setup, whose control positions are associated with particular family members, this two-player World version lets participants select their characters. The underlying objective remains the same: work through the stages, rescue Maggie, and return the family home. Its compact controls, selectable Simpsons heroes, and cooperative special moves make The Simpsons (2 Players World, set 1) a distinct arcade configuration of Konami’s 1991 Springfield adventure.
