About

Street Fighter II' : Special Champion Edition is Capcom's 1993 one-on-one fighting game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, published by Sega for the console. Known in Japan as Street Fighter II Dash Plus: Champion Edition, it brings the Street Fighter II tournament to Sega's 16-bit hardware in a version built around both Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting rule sets. Players select from twelve World Warriors, including the four Grand Masters who had been computer-only opponents in the original Street Fighter II, then travel between international stages in pursuit of the championship.

Matches are decided by depleting an opponent's energy bar across best-of-three rounds. Every fighter has a different range, speed, selection of normal attacks, throws, and command-based special techniques, so success comes from reading distance, blocking at the right height, countering predictable attacks, and turning an opening into a damaging sequence. Ryu and Ken's fireballs, uppercuts, and spinning kicks illustrate the familiar motion-and-button inputs, while characters such as Guile, Chun-Li, Blanka, E. Honda, Zangief, Dhalsim, and the bosses Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison demand their own approaches.

The main tournament is a single-player climb through the roster, with the player advancing after winning a match and ultimately confronting the Grand Masters. The expanded selection means that fighters can face a second player using the same character, distinguished by an alternate costume color. Alongside the regular arcade-style game, the cartridge offers head-to-head V.S. Battle, letting players adjust handicaps, choose a stage, and configure special moves before a fight. Its Group Battle mode turns a session into a small tournament: each side can choose a team of up to six fighters for match-play or elimination rules.

Special Champion Edition was designed to work with the Genesis/Mega Drive's three-button pad as well as the six-button controller associated with the game. On a three-button pad, Start switches the face buttons between punches and kicks; a six-button pad provides separate light, medium, and hard attacks directly. The options menu adjusts difficulty, the timer, and button assignments, while Champion mode uses the slower Champion Edition rules and Hyper mode adds the Hyper Fighting move set and selectable speed. These choices make the port more than a straight conversion of a single arcade revision.

As a Street Fighter II release, the game preserves the series' central appeal: two players testing character knowledge, reactions, positioning, and execution in short, tense rounds. It arrived on Mega Drive in Japan on September 28, 1993 and was one of the first Street Fighter II games available for Sega's system. Its combination of the twelve-character Champion Edition lineup, a faster Hyper option, support for six-button controls, and extra group competition gives Street Fighter II' : Special Champion Edition a distinct place among the many versions of Capcom's landmark fighting game.
