About
Metal Slug 2: Super Vehicle-001/II arcade is SNK's 1998 run-and-gun sequel for the Neo Geo MVS system. Building on the hand-drawn, cartoon-like military action of the first Metal Slug, it sends the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force back into the field after General Morden's forces regroup. Players can tackle the game alone or with a second player, choosing from returning soldiers Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving or newcomers Eri Kasamoto and Fiolina "Fio" Germi. Its dense animation, oversized machines and rapid-fire action were designed for the coin-operated MVS environment, where every mission presses the team onward toward a new boss encounter.
At its core, Metal Slug 2 is a side-scrolling action game about moving through hostile territory, firing at enemies, avoiding bullets and rescuing prisoners of war. The standard weapon is a pistol with unlimited ammunition, but supply crates and rescued POWs can provide temporary arms such as the Heavy Machine Gun, Shotgun, Rocket Launcher, Flame Shot and Laser Shot. Grenades offer another way to clear crowds or damage armored targets, while close-range knife attacks give the characters an answer when an enemy gets too near. A run can be lost quickly, so weapon pickups, careful positioning and learning where enemies appear are central to lasting through a mission.
The arcade game expands the series' vehicle play with several Slugs. The familiar SV-001 Metal Slug tank adds cannon fire and protection, while the Slug Flyer, Camel Slug and Slugnoid put the same destructive spirit into very different forms. Players can also find food and other items during missions; overeating triggers a temporary heavyset transformation that changes the character's appearance and makes some attacks more powerful. Freed POWs are not merely scenery: they can reward the team with weapons, ammunition, points or useful support, and a successful stage bonus depends on carrying those rescues through to the finish.
Metal Slug 2 moves through varied war zones and fantastical hazards rather than keeping to a single battlefield. The campaign begins with Morden's familiar soldiers and hardware, then introduces mummies, hostile creatures and a larger alien threat. Its story brings the four heroes into a conflict that becomes stranger as it advances, culminating in an uneasy fight against enemies that endanger Morden's own army as well. This mixture of military parody, elaborate sprite work and sudden visual gags is a defining part of the game's identity, even as every level follows the direct arcade rhythm of advance, survive and defeat the boss.
SNK released Metal Slug 2 for MVS in February 1998, with Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD editions following that year. The home versions preserved the main game, and the Neo Geo CD release added Combat School challenges based on completed missions. The original arcade version is also known for pronounced slowdown during especially busy scenes. SNK addressed that issue with the separately released 1999 update Metal Slug X, which remixed enemy placement, weapons, items and other presentation details; it should not be confused with Metal Slug 2 itself. Later anthology and digital releases helped keep the original sequel available, but its Neo Geo arcade version remains the foundation for its four-character roster, transformations and expanded vehicle lineup.
