About

X-Men (2 Players ver AAA) is Konami's 1992 arcade beat 'em up based on Marvel's mutant superhero team. This two-player revision uses the same side-scrolling action game as the larger X-Men arcade releases, but is configured for two people to play at once. Konami developed and published the game during the early 1990s arcade boom, turning a comic-book ensemble into a cooperative brawl full of oversized sprites, busy scenes, and the kind of immediate, coin-operated action designed for a quick start with a friend.

Players choose from Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Dazzler. Each has a recognizable attack style and a screen-clearing mutant ability, while the basic control scheme stays approachable: an eight-way joystick handles movement, with separate buttons for attack, jump, and mutant power. The heroes can move vertically as well as left and right, allowing them to line up enemies, avoid hazards, and work together around the crowded battle areas. Standard strikes, jumping attacks, throws, and repeated attacks provide the close-range tools needed to keep advancing.

The mutant-power button is the game's most important risk-and-reward mechanic. Cyclops fires optic blasts, Storm calls on the weather, Wolverine unleashes a berserker attack, and the other characters have their own dramatic special moves. These attacks can damage many opponents at once, making them especially useful when Sentinels and other enemies fill the screen. They also consume a portion of the character's health, so using them carelessly can leave a player vulnerable before the next boss encounter. Health items and occasional power-related pickups help shape the decision of when to save a special move and when to spend it.

The adventure begins with Magneto's forces threatening humanity and develops into a rescue mission involving Professor X and Kitty Pryde. Stages carry the team through locations under attack and toward Magneto's stronghold, with familiar Marvel adversaries and forces such as Sentinels, the Reavers, Pyro, Blob, Wendigo, Nimrod, the White Queen, Juggernaut, the Living Monolith, and Mystique appearing along the way. Each level ends with a major confrontation, so the long march of common enemies is regularly broken up by villain fights that demand more careful positioning and timing.

The final stretch brings the X-Men to Asteroid M, Magneto's base, where earlier enemies return before the climactic showdown. The game draws its character designs from the 1989 animated pilot Pryde of the X-Men rather than from a single comic-book issue, giving the cast a distinct late-1980s animated look. Its presentation combines comic-inspired art, character voices, and large action scenes with a straightforward arcade structure: push forward, protect your health, and continue until the team reaches Magneto.

Although the original release was also produced in four-player and spectacular six-player forms, X-Men (2 Players ver AAA) is a distinct two-player arcade revision listed under that exact title in MAME. Its reduced simultaneous-player count does not change the central appeal: two players can select from the full hero roster and fight side by side through the same campaign. The two-player format makes the cooperative rhythm more focused, with each player covering crowds, sharing space in boss battles, and choosing when a costly mutant power is worth the health it takes.

X-Men remains closely associated with Konami's run of licensed multiplayer arcade games, including the company's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Simpsons brawlers. The six-player cabinet became the most visually extravagant expression of the game, but this two-player AAA revision preserves the underlying design: accessible controls, a recognizable Marvel lineup, and a long cooperative battle against Magneto. For arcade players looking for a classic X-Men action game in a two-person configuration, it delivers the complete 1992 Konami adventure in a more compact form.
