About
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts for Game Boy Advance brings Capcom's demanding medieval-fantasy action series to Nintendo's 32-bit handheld. Released in North America in September 2002, this single-player adventure is a portable adaptation of the 1991 Super NES game, the third main Ghosts 'n Goblins entry. The Game Boy Advance release is known in Japan as Chō Makaimura R, and it combines the original quest with material created specifically for this version rather than simply presenting the earlier game unchanged.
Knight Arthur returns as the kingdom is struck by another supernatural attack. A demon abducts the princess, drawing Arthur from the castle and into a realm of graveyards, ruins, haunted seas, caverns and the enemy emperor's stronghold. The journey leads through a succession of hazardous stages filled with undead creatures, monsters, projectiles and environmental traps. Arthur's goal is to survive each course, overcome its guardian and continue toward the force behind the invasion.
At its heart, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a side-scrolling platform game built around careful movement, weapon choice and memorizing danger. Arthur can run, jump and attack, and this installment gives him a valuable double jump that can redirect him in midair. His default lance can be replaced by weapons found along the way, including knives, daggers, torches, crossbows and other specialized arms. Each has its own range, arc and pace, so a weapon that is helpful against one kind of enemy may be awkward in another section.
Survival is deliberately fragile. Arthur begins in armor, but a hit strips it away and leaves him in his underclothes; another blow costs a life. Treasure chests may provide replacement gear, better armor or a new weapon, yet they can also conceal a temporary transformation or another unwelcome surprise. Bronze armor improves the weapon Arthur carries, while gold armor adds stronger magical attacks and a shield that can stop a projectile under the right conditions. The result is a game in which collecting an upgrade is important, but protecting it is often just as important.
The standard game preserves the long-form challenge associated with Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Progress comes from learning stage layouts, enemy timing and the safe places to land as much as from reacting quickly. The quest is not finished by merely reaching the apparent end once: Arthur must obtain the Goddess's Bracelet, the weapon needed to confront Emperor Sardius, and this requirement gives the adventure its famously demanding repeat journey. The Game Boy Advance conversion also adds checkpoint saving, making its campaign more practical for portable play.
Its major addition is Arrange Mode. This alternate version reshapes the experience with redesigned stages and bosses that draw on earlier Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts material, while changing how access to the key bracelet works. That gives returning players a distinct route through familiar gothic action rather than only a screen-for-screen revisit. With its precise platforming, punishing armor system, unusual weapon selection and added handheld features, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Game Boy Advance stands as a substantial version of one of Capcom's best-known Arthur adventures.
