About

SpongeBob SquarePants and Friends Unite! for Game Boy Advance is the PAL title of the 2005 Nicktoons Unite! crossover, a single-player 2D action platformer developed for the handheld by Climax Action and published by THQ. It brings together SpongeBob SquarePants, Danny Phantom, Jimmy Neutron, and Timmy Turner from four Nickelodeon animated series. Rather than using the home-console version's four-character group format, this Game Boy Advance edition is built as a side-scrolling adventure with its own stage structure and a two-hero switching system. The result is a compact handheld quest that turns a television crossover into a sequence of platforming, combat, exploration, and character-based obstacles.

The story begins when Professor Calamitous gains access to interdimensional travel and unites with familiar foes including Plankton, Vlad Plasmius, and Denzel Crocker. Their plan threatens the heroes' separate worlds, prompting Jimmy's technology to bring the four protagonists together. The team travels through locations associated with each series, confronting the villains' forces and working toward the larger threat behind their alliance. The crossover premise gives SpongeBob, Danny, Timmy, and Jimmy a shared adventure while retaining the settings and enemies drawn from their individual cartoons.

Play proceeds through 2D stages set in places such as Casper High and the Fenton laboratory from Danny Phantom, Bikini Bottom and the Chum Bucket from SpongeBob SquarePants, Timmy's home and Dimmsdale, and Jimmy's laboratory and underground areas. At the start of a level, the player is assigned a pair of heroes and can alternate between them to get past its challenges. Progress involves moving through hostile environments, jumping across hazards, collecting needed items, defeating enemies, and finding the route forward. This makes choosing the right character part of the level design rather than merely a cosmetic change.

Each member of the cast has abilities tailored to particular barriers. Danny's ghost powers let him handle ghostly threats and pass through designated obstacles, while SpongeBob can use his body to squeeze through narrow openings. Timmy's fairy-assisted magic offers a different way through the environment, and Jimmy brings inventions such as a freezing ray and a jetpack. These tools encourage players to switch when a stage presents a character-specific route, and the limited two-character line-up keeps the GBA game's puzzle-platforming focus distinct from the larger console release.

SpongeBob SquarePants and Friends Unite! also stands as the opening chapter of the Nicktoons Unite! game series. Its cast combines properties that had largely appeared in separate licensed games, pairing cartoon worlds that range from underwater comedy to ghosts, fairy magic, and science fiction. The Game Boy Advance version shares its premise with releases for other systems but is not a direct copy of the home-console adventure: it is a dedicated 2D interpretation designed around handheld stages and alternating character pairs. Later crossover games continued the series, beginning with Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island.
