About

Breath of Fire II Game Boy Advance is Capcom's handheld version of the fantasy role-playing game originally released for Super Famicom in 1994. The GBA port arrived in Japan in late 2001 and North America in April 2002, bringing the second Breath of Fire adventure to Nintendo's portable system. It remains a direct sequel set centuries after the first game, following a new young hero named Ryu rather than retelling the original journey.

The story begins with Ryu and his friend Bow working as Rangers, taking paid assignments from their home town. A job goes wrong, Bow is blamed for a theft, and Ryu sets out to uncover the truth. That early mystery grows into a much wider quest involving Ryu's lost family, the Dragon Clan, demons, and the influence of the Church of St. Eva. The party crosses a world of towns, fortresses, caves, and dungeons while its members confront personal histories alongside the central threat.

Play takes place from a top-down perspective as the player talks to townspeople, searches locations, acquires key items, and navigates hostile territory. Random encounters lead into turn-based battles, where a party of up to four characters uses ordinary attacks, magic, items, and tactical options. Victories grant experience and levels, while character agility helps determine the order in which actions unfold. Formations let players arrange the group for different combat benefits, adding another consideration when building a party.

Ryu is joined by a varied cast, including Bow, the fighter Katt, the winged magician Nina, the trickster Sten, the frog prince Jean, the plant-like Spar, and others. Each party member has a Personal Action for use outside combat, so different companions can help negotiate obstacles, reach places, or solve environmental problems. Ryu's Dragon Clan heritage also matters in battle, allowing him to access powerful dragon transformations as the adventure progresses.

One of Breath of Fire II's defining systems is TownShip, a settlement that Ryu can develop by inviting discovered characters to live there. Residents can provide services, and the player chooses among different carpenters and their building styles. The game also introduces elemental Shamans; merging them with suitable party members can change abilities and battle potential. These town-building and fusion mechanics give the journey optional goals beyond the main storyline.

The Game Boy Advance edition preserves the core 16-bit adventure while adapting it for handheld play. It uses redrawn menu portraits, additional still images for story scenes, and a redesigned battle interface influenced by later series entries. A dash function makes travel quicker, and two GBA systems can use a link cable to exchange items between cartridges. For players seeking a portable Capcom RPG with a large party, long-form quest structure, and connections to the first Breath of Fire, this version presents the complete second chapter in the series.
