About

TMNT for Game Boy Advance is Ubisoft Montreal’s 2007 single-player side-scrolling beat ’em up based on the CGI film TMNT. Ubisoft published the North American release on March 20, 2007; Australia received TMNT: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles two days later, followed by Europe on March 23. Although it arrived alongside very differently structured TMNT games for home consoles, PC, DS, and PSP, this handheld edition is a standalone 2D action game built around the four turtle brothers’ street-level fights.

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael are each playable, with their recognizable weapons and individual fighting styles. Before a mission, the player chooses one turtle and a second turtle to support them with tag-team attacks. The action takes place on a scrolling 2.5D plane: players can move across the street or arena as well as left and right, position themselves around groups, and clear the opposition blocking the route forward.

The core of TMNT GBA is close-quarters combat. Standard button presses, directional variations, and jumping attacks create different moves, while launched opponents can be kept aloft with further strikes. Encounters mix thugs, Foot Clan fighters, robots, and bosses, encouraging players to manage crowds rather than only trade single hits. A charge meter fills during a fight; when it is ready, the selected partner can be called in for a special attack. Calling a partner when the screen is clear instead produces food that restores health.

Stages also provide improvised tools in addition to the turtles’ usual weapons. Defeated enemies can leave bats or swords behind, and breakable scenery can yield restorative food or objects such as pipes and slabs to use against foes. The campaign moves through seven missions and draws on the film’s characters and events, presenting its between-stage story material with hand-drawn comic-style scenes alongside movie imagery. Its locations include city streets, a diner, a park, a construction site, and a sequence set on a moving truck.

Progress continues outside the action. Victories grant experience that strengthens the turtles, while money collected during missions can be spent on extra lives and basic attribute upgrades. The Turtles’ lair acts as a hub for choosing or replaying cleared missions, visiting the trophy room, and entering a small city area with shops, training, and minigames. Achievements tied to tasks such as high combos and fast stage completions give players additional targets when returning to missions.

TMNT on Game Boy Advance is designed as a focused solo game rather than a link-cable multiplayer brawler. That distinction matters: the companion turtle appears through the tag system, but a second player does not join the session. The campaign’s compact arcade-style structure, selectable heroes, upgrades, and replayable challenges make it a notably different adaptation of the 2007 movie from Ubisoft’s more acrobatic 3D TMNT releases on other systems.
