About
Galaxian (Namco set 1) is the original 1979 Namco arcade fixed shooter, presented here as the Namco program set for the coin-operated game. Players pilot the Galaxip, a small starfighter defending Earth from an alien force. Released during the first great boom in arcade space shooters, Galaxian arrived after Space Invaders but established its own identity through colourful enemy graphics, a starfield, and attackers that abandon their orderly formation to swoop directly at the player.
The action takes place on a single screen. The Galaxip moves left and right along the bottom edge with the joystick, while one fire button launches its shots upward. Only one player shot can be on screen at a time, so shooting is as much about timing as speed: another beam cannot be fired until the previous one has struck a target or left the playfield. A collision with an alien or an enemy projectile costs a life, and a run ends after the available ships are gone.
Each round opens with ranks of aliens arranged above the player. Leaving them untouched is rarely safe for long. Individual enemies peel away and dive toward the bottom of the screen while firing, turning the formation into a changing pattern of threats. The player clears the wave by destroying every alien, then faces another formation with faster movement and more aggressive attacks. The simple objective supports score chasing, but the growing tempo makes it important to read a dive early, dodge without losing alignment, and make each upward shot count.
The formations also create a useful risk-and-reward target. Galaxian flagships can descend with red escorts, and destroying the group produces bonus scoring opportunities. That arrangement gives the player a reason to choose targets beyond the nearest attacker: a well-placed shot can be worth more than a safe one, while a missed shot may leave the Galaxip waiting as enemies close in. The game is single-player, with its challenge built around successive waves, limited lives, and the pursuit of a higher score rather than a fixed ending.
Galaxian was designed by Namco engineer Kazunori Sawano and became one of the company’s early arcade successes. Its animated, multicolour alien attacks helped distinguish it from the more rigid marching formations common in earlier shooters. The game’s direct control scheme and escalating waves made it easy to understand in an arcade setting, while its enemy dives supplied the tension that keeps an otherwise fixed screen in motion.
The original arcade game also became the foundation of the wider Galaxian series. Namco followed it with Galaga in 1981, a later game that expanded the idea and became especially famous in its own right. Galaxian itself has returned in Namco collections and other official retrospectives, preserving the lean design of the 1979 cabinet. For players interested in early arcade shooters, this Namco set captures the straightforward challenge that launched one of Namco’s best-known space-game lineages.
