About

Tekken 3 (World, TET2/VER.E1) is Namco's 1997 arcade fighting game, developed and published by Namco for the System 12 board. Set after the events of Tekken 2, it brings The King of Iron Fist Tournament back under Heihachi Mishima's control while the ancient fighter Ogre preys on martial artists. Jin Kazama enters the conflict seeking answers about his missing mother, giving the tournament story a new central rival and a more generational cast.

This World TET2/VER.E1 release is the World-region arcade revision, rather than the later PlayStation conversion. Its program ROMs identify it as the E1 World version, with the game's test data dated May and June 1997. The original cabinet is built for immediate two-player versus play: choose a fighter, work through computer opponents, or challenge the person at the other controls.

Tekken 3 keeps the series' four-limb attack layout, making left and right punches and kicks the building blocks for strings, throws, launchers and counterattacks. It makes lateral movement a shared part of the cast's toolset, so stepping around an incoming attack can create an opening instead of leaving every exchange on a straight line. Faster recovery after knockdowns, more ways out of certain holds and stuns, and expanded juggle possibilities make positioning and timing as important as raw button sequences.

The arcade lineup mixes returning competitors such as Heihachi, Nina, Paul, Lei and Yoshimitsu with newcomers who became series regulars. Jin's Mishima-style karate, Hwoarang's Taekwondo, Eddy Gordo's capoeira, Ling Xiaoyu's Chinese martial arts, Bryan Fury's kickboxing and Julia Chang's wrestling-inspired attacks give the cast markedly different rhythms. King II, Forest Law, Gun Jack, Kuma II and the living training dummy Mokujin continue or reinterpret familiar Tekken roles, while Ogre provides the tournament's supernatural threat.

The arcade roster ultimately covers 21 named selectable identities, although Anna, Tiger and Panda are alternate selections sharing Nina, Eddy and Kuma's respective moves in this version. Additional fighters and costumes are introduced to operators through time release rather than through a home save file: the attract sequence can announce an approaching character with a Coming Soon display. Once the relevant releases are active, Start-button selections expose the alternate characters and certain extra outfits.

Matches take place in fully modeled 3D arenas, and the stage presentation makes the new sidestep system easy to read: attacks can whiff past an opponent who has moved off the central line. The arcade campaign retains the concise structure expected of a coin-operated fighter, escalating toward the boss encounter and character-specific endings. Its focus is direct competitive combat, with system settings allowing arcade operators to configure details such as difficulty, round time and fight count.

The 1998 PlayStation port should not be mistaken for this arcade revision. It adds Tekken Force, a side-scrolling beat-'em-up mode, and Tekken Ball, plus console-specific characters Dr. Bosconovitch and Gon. It also turns Anna into a separately developed fighter with her own moves, voices and ending, while reworked backgrounds and reduced character detail accommodate the original PlayStation. TET2/VER.E1 instead preserves the System 12 coin-op version: its timed releases, shared-moveset alternates and arcade-first one-on-one format.
