About

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is Sega's 1990 arcade action game, released on the System 18 board and based on the "Smooth Criminal" world of the 1988 Moonwalker film. This is the dedicated arcade version of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, rather than the separately designed Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System games. Sega developed and published the coin-op game as a three-quarter-view action adventure in which Michael Jackson sets out to rescue kidnapped children and stop the criminal known as Mr. Big.

The cabinet supports one to three players at once. Every player controls a version of Michael, distinguished by costume colour—white, red, or black—while sharing the same mission through the game's locations. An eight-way joystick moves the character through isometric streets, clubs, graveyards, and other environments inspired by Jackson's screen image. The game is structured as a sequence of stages: clear the immediate threat, locate the child hidden in the area, and then survive the confrontation that guards progress to the next round.

Michael's ordinary attack is magical energy rather than a conventional punch. Tapping the attack button releases a short-range burst, while holding it charges a stronger shot; the charged animation incorporates his signature moonwalk. At close quarters he can use a spinning magical attack, giving the action a different rhythm from a standard scrolling brawler. Enemies include Mr. Big's henchmen and machines, and tougher targets take repeated hits. The arcade controls also give players a limited supply of Dance Magic, the screen-clearing special move that makes enemies dance before the attack takes effect.

Music and choreography are central to the game's identity. Dance Magic routines draw on Jackson's performance style and use arrangements of songs associated with his catalogue, while each stage has its own musical backdrop. The feature is functional as well as theatrical: it can relieve pressure when opponents surround the players, but its limited uses mean it is best saved for difficult moments. The mixture of cooperative arcade action, visual performance, and licensed music made Moonwalker unlike most licensed games of its period.

Bubbles, Jackson's pet chimpanzee, appears during the stages as an important power-up. Finding him transforms Michael into an armored, robotic Moonwalker form with greater durability and missile and laser attacks. The change turns the final stretch of a round into a more forceful shooter-like sequence before the stage's boss encounter. Once the enemy forces have been defeated, the rescued children and the next location advance the story toward Mr. Big.

Sega issued Michael Jackson's Moonwalker in 1990, with the 317-0159 set representing one of its arcade program revisions. Its System 18 presentation, three-player cabinet option, and isometric view separate it sharply from the side-scrolling console adaptations released around the same time. The arcade game remains a distinctive early-1990s Sega release: a licensed film tie-in that uses Michael Jackson's persona, dance moves, and music as active parts of its cooperative action design rather than merely as decoration.
