About

Mortal Kombat brings Midway's tournament fighter to the Game Boy. Developed by Probe Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment, this handheld version was released on September 13, 1993 as part of the game's "Mortal Monday" home launch.

The contest takes place on Shang Tsung's island, where Earthrealm's defenders enter a high-stakes martial-arts tournament. Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Kano, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Raiden are drawn into a conflict shaped by the sorcerer Shang Tsung and the long-reigning champion Goro.

On Game Boy, players select from six fighters: Liu Kang, Sonya, Kano, Raiden, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Each combatant has a distinct special move alongside the punches, kicks, sweeps and uppercuts that form the core of a match.

Battles are one-on-one and played over timed rounds. Reducing an opponent's health bar first wins a round, while the first fighter to take two rounds claims the match.

A single-player climb pits the selected fighter against computer-controlled opponents on the way to the tournament's major challenges. Two players can also compete directly using the Game Boy's link capability.

The portable adaptation pares back the arcade game's presentation and roster for the system's monochrome screen and two-button controls. It retains the series' competitive duels, signature characters and supernatural tournament setting in a compact handheld format.
