About

Medarot: Parts Collection is a Japanese Game Boy role-playing companion game released by Imagineer on March 20, 1998 and developed by Natsume. It belongs to the Medarot series, later known internationally as Medabots, and is tied specifically to the original 1997 Medarot for Game Boy. Rather than repeating that game’s paired Kabuto and Kuwagata adventures, Parts Collection is a compact, battle-focused side story designed to expand a player’s available Medarot equipment. It was released in Japan and uses the Japanese Medarot name.

The central attraction is building and improving Medarots: customizable robots assembled from a head, two arm, and leg components, with a Medal serving as the unit’s core. Battles against other Medarotters are the route to new components. The Parts Collection format concentrates on those encounters, giving the player a more direct way to pursue equipment than the main role-playing game’s broader story. Each victory adds to the practical goal of gathering complete sets and experimenting with different robot builds.

This first Parts Collection uses Paddy, a character from the original Medarot, as its protagonist. Its premise places her in a fantasy-like world associated with a dream, where she fights through the floors of castle towers to reach Yuuki. That unusual setting gives the game a self-contained scenario instead of trying to continue the main game’s full narrative. Progress comes from clearing successive opponents and areas, so the journey works as both a short RPG campaign and a structured series of Robattles.

Its value within the original Game Boy release family is its catalogue of parts. Medarot itself had Kabuto and Kuwagata versions, each with differences in the equipment available to collect. Parts Collection was made to provide parts from both versions, letting players fill gaps in a collection and test combinations that might otherwise be unavailable in one cartridge. Compatible link features allowed the acquired parts and Medals to be transferred to the related main game, turning the side game into a useful extension of an existing Medarot save rather than an entirely separate branch of the series.

Medarot: Parts Collection was followed by Medarot: Parts Collection 2 for Game Boy later in 1998, and later Medarot entries received their own Parts Collection-style companions. The first game stands out as an early example of the series using an add-on adventure to support its customizable robot battle system. For players interested in the original Medarot Game Boy era, it offers a focused route through battles, equipment collection, and link-enabled roster building while preserving its own small-scale dream-world story.
