About

FIFA International Soccer for Game Boy brings the first entry in EA Sports’ long-running football series to Nintendo’s monochrome handheld. Released in 1995, this version was developed by Probe Software and issued by Malibu Games under the EA Sports label. It adapts the international-football theme and angled match view associated with the original FIFA International Soccer, reshaping the concept for a portable Game Boy cartridge rather than simply presenting the home-console game unchanged.

The focus is on matches between national sides. Players select their team and set up a fixture before taking control on the pitch, with the computer directing the rest of the side. Rather than using licensed footballers, the squads use fictional player names, an important distinction for a game carrying the FIFA licence. Team selection and pre-match information give the game an international tournament atmosphere even though its roster is not built around authentic player identities.

On the field, FIFA International Soccer uses a diagonal, isometric-style viewpoint. This perspective places the grass pitch at an angle and shows play advancing toward either goal, a notable alternative to the straight top-down views common in many earlier football games. The D-pad moves the currently controlled player, while the Game Boy’s buttons handle the essential on-ball and defensive actions. Passing into space, chasing loose balls, protecting the goal and working an opening for a shot form the basic rhythm of each match.

The Game Boy edition includes configurable match details so a game can be set up to suit a quick contest or a more deliberate session. Available options include the game type, participating teams, fouls, weather and pitch conditions. These choices give players some control over the tone of a match before kickoff, while the limited handheld display keeps the action centred on following the ball and changing control as play moves from attack to defence.

FIFA International Soccer is a single-screen handheld interpretation of a game that began on the Mega Drive/Genesis in late 1993 and then spread across several systems. The broader release established the FIFA name as a recurring football series; this Game Boy version shows how that early formula was carried onto a portable platform during 1995. Its national-team focus, fictional squads and slanted camera make it a distinct snapshot of the franchise’s first era, before later installments moved toward broader licensing and increasingly elaborate presentation.

For retro Game Boy football fans, FIFA International Soccer is best approached as a compact adaptation of a formative EA Sports release. It preserves the sport’s familiar contest of moving the ball, creating chances and defending a lead, while its international setting and adjustable match rules supply the framework around each game. The result is a period-specific portable soccer title connected to the beginning of FIFA’s video-game history, rather than a reproduction of the larger versions released for other hardware.
