About
Super Mario Bros. + Duck Hunt + World Class Track Meet is the NES cartridge that brings together all three games named on its label. This is the three-game version distributed with Nintendo's NES Power Set, which included the console, controllers, an NES Zapper, and a Power Pad. It is not the earlier two-game Super Mario Bros. + Duck Hunt cartridge, and it is not a collection of the separately sold games.
Super Mario Bros. is the controller-based side-scrolling platform game in which Mario travels through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser. Players run, jump, break blocks, collect power-ups, and make their way through the game's worlds and castles. A second player can take turns as Luigi, using the same NES controller setup.
Duck Hunt is the light-gun portion of the cartridge. The player aims the NES Zapper at the television to shoot ducks as they fly across the screen, while the hound retrieves successful hits and reacts to misses. Its duck modes include one- and two-duck rounds, and the game also includes Clay Shooting, where clay targets are launched in pairs.
Duck Hunt requires the NES Zapper connected to controller socket 2. In its two-player Game A, one player shoots with the Zapper while the other uses Controller 1 to steer the duck's flight. The game was designed around the original light-gun-and-television setup rather than the standard controller alone.
World Class Track Meet is the cartridge's athletics game and is played with the Power Pad rather than a conventional controller. Players run and jump by stepping on the mat's sensors, turning the action into a physical competition. The Power Pad supports up to two players simultaneously for this game.
The cartridge's three selections therefore use the accessories that defined the Power Set: a regular NES controller for Super Mario Bros., the Zapper for Duck Hunt, and the Power Pad for World Class Track Meet. Its significance is in joining Nintendo's flagship platform game, light-gun game, and floor-mat sport game on one Power Set pack-in cartridge.
