About

Medarot: Kabuto Version is a Japanese role-playing game for Game Boy, developed by Natsume and published by Imagineer on November 28, 1997. It is the first game in the Medarot series.

Set in a near-future world where robot-pet battles called Robattles are widely popular, the story follows the boy Hikaru. Though he has no interest in Robattles, a walk with his dog brings him into contact with the RoboRobo Gang, whose crimes involve Medarots.

After the encounter, Hikaru's dog finds a Medal, the component that serves as a Medarot's brain. That discovery draws Hikaru into a larger incident and starts his path as a Medarot owner.

Medarots are assembled around a Tinpet frame using a head, right-arm, left-arm, and leg part, plus a Medal. Robattles let players use customized teams of up to three Medarots; victories can yield opponents' parts for further customization.

Kabuto Version is one half of the original paired release. Its counterpart, Medarot: Kuwagata Version, is a separate Game Boy version with different available Medals and parts; it is not the same game record.

This entry refers to the 1997 original, not the 1999 WonderSwan release Medarot Perfect Edition, the 2004 Game Boy Advance remake Shingata Medarot, or the later Medarot Classics collections.
