About

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge for Game Boy is Konami's 1991 follow-up to Castlevania: The Adventure, returning the series to Christopher Belmont's era. Set fifteen years after Christopher defeated Count Dracula, the side-scrolling action game begins when Dracula takes revenge through Christopher's son, Soleil. The villain transforms Soleil into a demon and uses the boy's power to rebuild his stronghold, sending the veteran vampire hunter back into Transylvania for a single-player rescue mission.

Christopher advances through haunted castles armed first with the Belmont whip. Its reach can be improved by collecting power-ups, while enemy encounters and obstacles demand careful timing on the Game Boy's directional pad and buttons. Candles and other pickups can yield hearts, which act as ammunition for special weapons rather than a health supply. The game also lets players preserve progress with passwords, an important convenience for a portable adventure built around tough rooms, bosses, and repeated attempts.

Rather than sending players down one fixed opening route, Belmont's Revenge begins with four separate castles that can be tackled in any order. Each has a different visual and mechanical identity, including air, plant, earth, and crystal themes, and each culminates in a confrontation that moves Christopher nearer to Dracula. This structure gives the early quest a degree of choice while keeping its goal clear: overcome the dangers guarding the route to Soleil and the restored castle beyond.

The sequel expands the Game Boy formula with sub-weapons. Holy water and an additional ranged weapon give Christopher options beyond the whip, though the regional releases are not identical: the Japanese version uses a cross, whereas the North American release replaces it with an axe. That difference matters because the weapons travel differently, making version-specific tactics part of the game's history. The game later appeared in the Konami GB Collection compilation in Japan and Europe, where it received an official color presentation.

As the second Castlevania release made for Nintendo's original Game Boy, Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge stands directly beside The Adventure in the series' handheld lineage while refining its predecessor's approach. Its selectable first castles, password system, weapon pickups, trap-filled stages, and Christopher-and-Soleil storyline give this compact Gothic action game a distinct place in the early Castlevania catalog. Konami also included it in the 2019 Castlevania Anniversary Collection, preserving the original Game Boy installment alongside other foundational entries in the franchise.
