About
Initial D Gaiden is a Game Boy racing game released in Japan on March 6, 1998. It was developed by MTO and published by Kodansha.
The game is based on Shuichi Shigeno's Initial D, the Young Magazine manga centered on Japanese street racing. Its setting draws on the series' world of mountain-pass competition.
This side story puts Itsuki Takeuchi in the spotlight. Itsuki is Takumi Fujiwara's friend in the original manga, so the game approaches the familiar setting from the viewpoint of a supporting character.
Its story is presented with a deliberately light, comic tone. Players encounter characters from the early part of the original work as the scenario unfolds.
Races take place on mountain roads, where the player battles those characters on the passes. The result is a compact handheld adaptation that combines a character-led side story with the mountain racing central to Initial D.
