About
Dance Dance Revolution GB brought Konami’s dance-game series to the Game Boy Color in Japan on 3 August 2000. Developed by Now Production and published by Konami, it was a Japan-only release and the first of the three standard Dance Dance Revolution GB installments, apart from the later Disney and Oha Suta-themed handheld entries.
Rather than asking the player to stand on an arcade platform, this version turns the familiar scrolling-arrow routine into a handheld rhythm game. Prompts rise toward the targets while the player keeps time on the Game Boy Color: the directional pad covers left and down, while the A and B buttons stand in for right and up. That split also makes simultaneous inputs—the portable equivalent of DDR jumps—possible without needing to press two directions on the pad at once.
The cartridge includes a controller setting for the small Finger Step Controller, a snap-on thumb pad made to sit over the Game Boy Color’s controls and suggest the layout of a dance pad. It is optional rather than required, so the game can also be played with the console’s ordinary buttons; the control scheme is a deliberate translation of floor-pad choreography into finger movements.
Its song selection is drawn largely from Dance Dance Revolution 2ndMIX, with 17 tracks in the handheld set. The mix combines Konami staples such as AM-3P, BRILLIANT 2U, PARANOiA, PARANOiA MAX ~DIRTY MIX~, and SP-TRIP MACHINE ~JUNGLE MIX~ with dance-pop licenses including BOOM BOOM DOLLAR, BUTTERFLY, DAM DARIRAM, DUB-I-DUB, HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN MELLOW, and IF YOU WERE HERE.
The game retains the score-chasing framework of early DDR in a compact form, offering difficulty and song-count settings alongside its regular play options. Free Play has a Tough setting, and a hidden Couple option can be reached from the mode-selection screen; the latter reflects the series’ two-player cooperative style even as this conversion centers on one small screen. As an early Game Boy Color experiment, it preserves the recognizable 2ndMIX identity while making the physical dance-game concept workable with a D-pad, two face buttons, and an optional thumb controller.
