About
Yars' Revenge for Game Boy Color is a 1999 science-fiction shooter published by Telegames. It reworks Atari's 1982 home-console game for Nintendo's color handheld, retaining the conflict between the insect-like Yars and the hostile Qotile while reshaping the action for a portable cartridge. The Game Boy Color release arrived in North America in September 1999, with a European release following in 2000, and is a distinct remake rather than a direct reproduction of the Atari 2600 program.
Each encounter places the Yar on the left side of the battlefield and a Qotile installation behind its protective energy shield. The aim is to open a route through that barrier and then destroy the enemy with the Zorlon Cannon. The Yar can fire ordinary shots to remove shield cells from a distance or fly into the cells to consume them, a riskier approach that puts the player closer to danger. Successful attacks supply the energy needed to bring the powerful cannon into play, so clearing a stage depends on choosing when to chip away at defenses, when to gather energy, and when to line up the final shot.
The Qotile is not passive. Its Destroyer Missile pursues the Yar across the playfield, and the central Neutral Zone provides a temporary refuge from that threat at the cost of offensive options. A Swirl attack adds another hazard and can itself become a target for the Zorlon Cannon. Vertical wraparound movement remains an important survival tool: flying beyond one vertical edge brings the Yar back from the other, allowing quick escapes and alternative routes around incoming danger. The cannon must also be handled carefully, since its path can endanger the player as well as the Qotile.
Yars' Revenge Game Boy Color builds on the original game's repeating duel structure with a scrolling playfield, newly drawn color graphics, music, and intermission scenes. Rather than being limited to the older fixed-screen presentation, the larger field lets the action move as the Yar travels. The campaign contains 250 levels that increase the pressure through faster, more threatening opposition, and a password system lets players return to later progress. Between the regular battles, the remake also includes a bonus sequence in which the Yar navigates an asteroid field and seeks the Ghost of Yar for extra points.
The premise still draws on the Razak solar system and the Yars' struggle against the Qotile, connecting this handheld entry to one of Atari's best-known original-era concepts. Its title uses the plural Yars' rather than the later singular Yar's used by a different 2011 game, an important distinction for anyone tracing the series. The Game Boy Color version keeps the recognizable shield-breaking and cannon-aiming loop while adding portable-era presentation and progression features, making it a version with its own structure and content rather than merely an Atari 2600 compilation inclusion.
For players exploring Game Boy Color shooters, Yars' Revenge combines short arcade-style objectives with a more tactical rhythm than a straightforward enemy wave game. Every Qotile encounter asks the player to manage a pursuit threat, find or create an opening in the shield, charge the Zorlon Cannon, and avoid getting caught in its line of fire. That cycle preserves the unusual identity of the original design while the scrolling arenas, passwords, intermissions, and bonus stage give this 1999 handheld remake a character of its own.
