About

Koudelka for PlayStation is a single-player horror role-playing game from Sacnoth, released in Japan by SNK in December 1999. North America received the game in June 2000, while Infogrames issued the European edition later that year. Its story begins on Halloween 1898, when the mysterious medium Koudelka Iasant is drawn to Nemeton, an isolated Welsh monastery transformed into a decaying mansion. The PlayStation game combines a late-Victorian supernatural mystery with role-playing progression, exploration, puzzles, and a deliberately claustrophobic setting.

Nemeton is the whole of Koudelka's dangerous world. Koudelka enters the building in search of the source calling to her and soon joins Edward Plunkett, an adventurer with his own reasons for being there, and Bishop James O'Flaherty. Their investigation uncovers the estate's history, its troubled residents, and the forces behind the monsters roaming its rooms and corridors. Dialogue scenes carry the narrative between expeditions through the mansion, with the three leads differing sharply in outlook and motives as the situation becomes more personal.

Exploration uses 3D character models against fixed-camera, pre-rendered environments, giving the PlayStation game a survival-horror-adjacent sense of place. Players search rooms for useful items, documents, equipment, and puzzle clues while managing a limited inventory. Progress means opening a route through Nemeton as much as winning fights: locked doors, keys, mechanisms, and the layout of the monastery repeatedly shape the party's next destination. The presentation also makes the mansion's individual spaces part of the storytelling, from neglected halls to chambers that reveal pieces of its past.

Combat shifts to a turn-based grid. Party members and enemies occupy squares, so positioning matters before choosing to move, strike, use magic, apply an item, or attempt to escape. Koudelka, Edward, and James can each use physical weapons and magical abilities, and experience from victories raises their levels. Ability points allow players to develop attributes, while regular use improves proficiency with particular weapons and spells. Weapons are not permanent solutions: they wear down and can break, which encourages attention to condition, range, damage type, and the supplies carried into the next encounter.

Sacnoth built Koudelka as a genre hybrid rather than a conventional fantasy quest. Its four-disc PlayStation release pairs the mansion-bound adventure with cinematic sequences and English-language voice performances, including in the Japanese version. Hiroki Kikuta, a former Square composer who founded Sacnoth, served as the game's principal creative lead and composer; the score's orchestral and choral character supports the ecclesiastical setting without turning the game into a historical simulation. The result is a self-contained journey whose horror comes from ghosts, alchemy, old crimes, and the consequences of trying to overcome death.

Koudelka also established the setting that Sacnoth later revisited in the Shadow Hearts series. It is not a port or a remake of those PlayStation 2 games, but the original PlayStation chapter that introduces its heroine and supernatural world. For players exploring PlayStation RPGs, Koudelka stands out for marrying party growth and tactical turns to a compact gothic mystery: the goal is to survive Nemeton, understand why it has become a place of terror, and decide how its lingering tragedy can finally be confronted.
