About

Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss for PlayStation is a first-person fantasy role-playing adventure released in Japan on March 14, 1997. Developed by Infinity Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts Victor, it reworks Origin Systems' 1992 Ultima Underworld for Sony's console. The game places the player in the role of the Avatar, the long-running Ultima series hero, after he is blamed for the abduction of Baron Almric's daughter, Arial. His sentence is exile to the Great Stygian Abyss, an immense underground world whose dangers and mysteries must be overcome to clear his name.

The adventure unfolds entirely within the Abyss, viewed from the Avatar's eyes. Players explore its linked levels, corridors, settlements, caverns and hidden spaces, gradually mapping an underground realm shaped by the remains of Cabirus's failed colony. The immediate mission is to find Arial and identify the force behind her kidnapping, but progress depends on investigating the world, finding useful objects and piecing together how its inhabitants, places and magical relics relate to one another. The setting is not simply a sequence of fights: its human, goblin and other residents can become sources of information, trade or quests.

Character creation establishes the Avatar's class, abilities and skills before the descent begins. Advancement comes through exploration, combat and completed tasks, improving the character's capacity to survive deeper in the dungeon. Real-time encounters use melee and ranged weapons, while magic relies on discovered runestones and their combinations. Inventory management is part of the journey, since equipment has weight and supplies such as food, light and weapons matter during long expeditions. Looking around, jumping, swimming and manipulating items support the game's exploratory focus, while an automap records the territory the player has seen.

The PlayStation release preserves the original game's premise and first-person dungeon role-playing structure, but it is not merely a straight conversion. Infinity Entertainment rebuilt creatures and non-player characters as polygonal models while retaining the environment and item textures, and redesigned the display and inventory interface for full-screen console play. The release also adds sound effects, remixes the music, and includes new opening and ending movies. Its character art was redrawn in an anime-influenced style for the Japanese market, giving this version a visual identity distinct from the earlier computer release.

This edition is especially notable within the Ultima catalogue because it was the series' only PlayStation release and was issued only in Japan. Its Japanese release also means that it arrived years after the original game's 1992 debut, so it represents a later console interpretation of a foundational entry in the Underworld branch of Ultima rather than a new sequel. The underlying story takes place after Ultima VI: The False Prophet, although the game is built to send the Avatar into a self-contained underground crisis with its own cast, rival groups and ancient history.

For players interested in early first-person role-playing design, Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss on PS1 offers an unusual console take on a game known for mixing real-time exploration, role-playing statistics, conversation, puzzles and magic. The task of rescuing Arial provides direction, but the Abyss rewards close observation and a willingness to engage with its systems instead of treating every obstacle as a direct battle. Its Japan-only status, revised presentation and position in the Ultima series make it a distinctive PlayStation curiosity as well as an adaptation of a landmark fantasy dungeon adventure.
