About

Silver Jiken is the Japanese PlayStation release name for The Silver Case, a text-driven crime adventure from Grasshopper Manufacture. This particular PS1 edition is the ASCII Casual Collection reissue published in Japan in October 2000, following the original Japanese release in 1999. Directed and designed by Goichi Suda, the game was Grasshopper Manufacture's first title. It is a single-player mystery built around reading, investigation, and a striking screen-based presentation rather than action-oriented play.

The story takes place in 1999 in the fictional Kanto 24th Ward, where a string of unsettling murders has drawn the attention of the police department's Heinous Crimes Unit. The investigators find connections to Kamui Uehara, a notorious murderer associated with an earlier case and believed to be no longer a threat. That apparent contradiction drives the central investigation. Players encounter the case through the perspectives of the police and of freelance writer Tokio Morishima, so the same wider crisis can be viewed from different professional and personal angles.

Silver Jiken is divided into two selectable scenario lines. Transmitter follows the detectives as they pursue leads and confront the cases facing the Heinous Crimes Unit, while Placebo follows Morishima's reporting and involvement with the events. The PlayStation game uses first-person exploration during interactive sequences: the player looks around locations, moves between points in the environment, examines items, and selects actions when the situation calls for them. Text, questions, and context-sensitive puzzles carry much of the progression, making careful attention to dialogue and clues important.

Its most distinctive feature is the Film Window presentation. Narrative text, illustrations, interface elements, 3D scenes, photographs, video material, and other visual information appear in separate moving windows rather than in a conventional single-screen layout. The approach gives the investigation an intentionally fragmented visual rhythm while allowing the game to shift between dialogue, evidence, and atmosphere. Character artwork by Takashi Miyamoto and music by Masafumi Takada support the noir-leaning modern-Japan setting and the story's mix of police procedure, conspiracy, and unease.

Originally available only in Japan on PlayStation, Silver Jiken later reached wider audiences as The Silver Case through a high-definition remaster. The original PS1 release remains the starting point for the setting and characters later associated with Grasshopper Manufacture's Silver Case world. A mobile sequel, The 25th Ward: The Silver Case, continued that line of stories years later. For players exploring late-1990s PlayStation adventure games, Silver Jiken stands out for combining an investigative visual novel format with an unusually designed storytelling system.
