About

Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus is Konami's 1997 PlayStation collection of three arcade scrolling shooters from the Salamander branch of the Gradius series. Released in Japan in early July 1997, it brings together the original 1986 Salamander, the Japanese arcade version of Life Force, and 1996's Salamander 2. The package was also issued for Sega Saturn, but this PlayStation release presents the trilogy as a single disc for players who want to trace the series from its first alien-world sortie to its later arcade sequel.

At the heart of every included game is a fast-moving 2D shoot-'em-up built around surviving dense enemy formations, collecting power-ups, and breaking through a sequence of hostile stages and bosses. One player pilots the Vic Viper, while a second can join simultaneously in the companion craft traditionally known as Lord British. The original Salamander is especially notable beside its Gradius relatives for alternating horizontal and vertical scrolling stages and for giving players immediate pickups rather than making them advance a power-up meter. Speed, missiles, lasers, shields, and satellite-like Options can dramatically change a run, but a destroyed ship leaves the player exposed again.

Salamander's science-fiction action has the pilots entering a bizarre organic menace associated with the Zelos threat. Its shifting viewpoints turn the journey into more than a straight flight across space: volcanic passages, biological interiors, and mechanical hazards demand quick repositioning as the screen scrolls. The arcade design rewards learning enemy patterns and stage layouts, whether playing alone or coordinating fire and movement with a second player. Boss encounters punctuate the route, asking players to balance aggressive shots with careful use of the limited space around the ship.

The collection does not simply substitute an overseas title for Life Force. It includes the Japanese arcade Life Force, Konami's reworked take on Salamander, whose presentation leans further into the living-body setting and whose power-up selection uses a Gradius-style gauge. That distinction matters because the North American Life Force changed the story framing, terminology, and several visual details from Salamander. Having Salamander and Japanese Life Force side by side makes the compilation a useful comparison of two closely related arcade designs: one centered on direct icon pickups and one shaped by a selectable upgrade bar.

Salamander 2 supplies the collection's newest game. Originally released to arcades in 1996, the sequel retains the series' mixture of horizontal and vertical scrolling while adding its own weapons, enemies, and audiovisual style. Its inclusion was significant for a home console compilation because it placed the sequel alongside its predecessors rather than treating the pack as a simple reissue of the first game. Across all three titles, the PlayStation disc keeps the focus on arcade-style sessions, with selectable difficulty and continue options that make the games more approachable while preserving their rapid, pattern-driven challenge.

As a Konami compilation, Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus documents an important offshoot of Gradius rather than collecting unrelated shooters. Salamander helped distinguish itself through cooperative play, alternating stage directions, and a more immediate approach to upgrades, while Life Force shows how Konami revised that formula for a different presentation and system. The Japanese-only PlayStation release offers those two interpretations together with Salamander 2, making it a compact look at the series' arcade history and at the design ideas Konami carried forward through a decade of scrolling-shooter development.
