About
Langrisser IV & V: Final Edition is a Japanese PlayStation tactical role-playing collection released on January 28, 1999 by Nippon Computer Systems under the Masaya label. It brings together Langrisser IV and Langrisser V: The End of Legend, the fourth and fifth main entries in the fantasy strategy series, which had first appeared on Sega Saturn. Developed by Career Soft, the two games form a connected late-series story arc, while the PlayStation release presents both campaigns in one package. The compilation is a single-player experience built around scenario-based, turn-driven battles rather than a conventional exploration-focused RPG.
Each campaign places commanders and the troops they lead on overhead battlefield maps. Before a scenario, the player prepares an army by recruiting mercenary units and managing equipment and items; during combat, commanders, soldiers, cavalry, archers, pikemen, flying units, and magical forces must be positioned with both terrain and enemy matchups in mind. A commander’s class and nearby command range matter because troops perform more effectively when supported by their leader. The games use the series’ large-scale military framing, asking players to direct formations and named commanders against opposing forces instead of controlling only a small adventuring party.
Langrisser IV follows Landius, the son of Gotaal’s mayor, after the town comes under the harsh control of the Regenburg Federation’s powerful general Gizarov. His resistance begins as a local struggle but draws him into a wider conflict among nations and the forces surrounding the sacred sword Langrisser. Its sequel shifts focus to Sigma, an artificial soldier created by Gizarov, who awakens with Lambda in a laboratory threatened by the warlord Rainforce. Sigma’s search for his identity unfolds amid the turmoil in Regenburg and a danger connected to Alhazard, the dark counterpart to Langrisser.
The pair belongs to a series whose fantasy world repeatedly pits the influence of the light goddess Lushiris against the dark god Chaos, with the two legendary swords at the center of recurring wars. Langrisser IV and V retain the command-and-mercenary format associated with the earlier games while using an initiative-style Judgment system to determine the order and frequency of unit actions. Character development also influences play: class changes and army composition give commanders different battlefield roles, and story choices can affect relationships and narrative development. These systems make planning before a battle as important as maneuvering once the fighting begins.
Final Edition is especially notable as the PlayStation version of two late-era Langrisser games rather than a remake that replaces their identities. It updated the Saturn releases for Sony’s console, and contemporary catalog information identifies PlayStation-specific difficulty options and bonus material. The collection preserves the contrast between IV’s campaign of Landius and V’s more science-fiction-inflected story of Sigma, while linking both to the larger El Sallia saga. For players interested in 1990s Japanese tactical RPGs, Langrisser IV & V: Final Edition offers two substantial strategy campaigns centered on commanders, mercenary armies, branching character elements, and the enduring conflict between Langrisser and Alhazard.
