About

Langrisser I & II for PlayStation is Masaya Games’ 1997 Japanese compilation of the opening two chapters in its fantasy tactical role-playing series. Released on July 31, it brings Langrisser and its sequel together on one PS1 disc, presenting wars fought over the holy sword Langrisser and the fate of the continent of El Sallia. The collection is a distinct late-1990s PlayStation release, rather than the later Sega Saturn Langrisser: Dramatic Edition or the modern 2019 remake.

Players choose one of the two campaigns and advance through scenario-based, turn-driven battles. Each map asks commanders and the mercenaries they hire to meet an objective, often by defeating the opposing force or key enemy commanders. Positioning is central: a commander supports troops within a command range, while keeping them adjacent can restore their health between turns. If a commander falls, the mercenaries attached to that leader are lost as well, giving each move weight beyond a simple exchange of units.

The tactical system builds battles around terrain, recruitment, character growth, equipment and unit matchups. Infantry, cavalry and pikemen form a familiar three-way relationship, while other troop types bring specialized roles; ranged soldiers counter fliers, for example, and water units perform best around waterways. Victories earn resources and experience for commanders, who can change class and gain access to different forces. The result is a campaign structure in which party development and the makeup of every commander’s squad matter alongside the immediate layout of the battlefield.

The first game follows the struggle surrounding the kingdom of Baldea and its connection to the sacred blade. Langrisser II expands the conflict with the young warrior Elwin, the Rayguard Empire and the rival powers drawn into a new holy war. Its story is especially associated with branching decisions: choices made over the course of the campaign can lead Elwin toward different allegiances and endings, so the route through its war is not fixed. Across both games, dialogue scenes and illustrated presentation frame the succession of military scenarios.

This PS1 Langrisser I & II uses the systems of the later versions available to Masaya at the time rather than simply reproducing the earliest Mega Drive releases. Its second half is based on the expanded Der Langrisser line, while the first also adopts that game’s underlying approach, giving the two campaigns a more consistent interface and tactical framework. It also has PlayStation-specific music and visual material, with the series’ character illustrations associated with Satoshi Urushihara helping define its anime-styled fantasy identity.

For PlayStation strategy RPG fans, Langrisser I & II preserves the series’ large commander-and-mercenary battles in a single Japanese release. It connects the foundational story of Langrisser with the more route-driven design of its sequel, making it a useful snapshot of how Masaya reworked its early tactical games for the 32-bit era. The compilation later received a Windows conversion, while the distinct Saturn Dramatic Edition added further scenarios to the second game and should not be confused with this PS1 version.
