About

Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu is a 1996 Super Famicom tactical role-playing game from Intelligent Systems and Nintendo, and the fourth main Fire Emblem release. Known in English as Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, it moves the series to the war-torn continent of Jugdral. Its story begins with Sigurd, a young noble of Chalphy who takes the field as political conflict spreads across the land. The campaign was released in Japan on May 14, 1996, late in the Super Famicom's life, and it remained a Japanese release in its original form. The game combines the series' grid-based battles and permanent character losses with an unusually broad, multi-generation drama.

On every chapter map, the player directs an army of individual units against enemy forces in turn-based combat. Mounted knights, infantry, healers, mages, fliers, and other classes differ in movement, equipment, and battlefield role, so positioning and the order of attacks matter as much as raw numbers. Capturing enemy castles is central to completing objectives, while the player's home castle serves as an important strategic point. Units earn experience through battle, gain levels, and can be permanently removed from the roster when defeated; losing the army leader or allowing the home castle to fall requires restarting the chapter. Rather than presenting a string of small skirmishes, Seisen no Keifu uses large maps with several castles and opposing groups to make each campaign feel like a journey across a region of Jugdral.

The game refined the series formula with systems that affect both tactics and long-term planning. Its Weapon Triangle establishes a three-way relationship among swords, axes, and lances, creating situational advantages before individual statistics are considered. Weapon condition, repair costs, personal inventories, class restrictions, skills, terrain, and magical affinities add further decisions. Gold is held by individual characters rather than pooled for the whole army, so purchasing, repairing, and transferring equipment must be planned around each unit. Castle services and arena battles give players opportunities to prepare during a chapter, while conversations and scripted events can introduce recruits, alter a battle, or reveal more about the conflict.

Seisen no Keifu is especially identified with its two-generation structure. The first half follows Sigurd and his companions, while the latter half shifts to his son Seliph and a new group shaped by the earlier campaign. Eligible first-generation characters can form relationships through their actions and proximity. Those pairings influence the children who appear later, including inherited equipment, abilities, holy blood, and aspects of their growth. This makes choices in the early chapters carry forward into the second half rather than simply changing a short scene. The narrative spans wars among Jugdral's kingdoms, ancient crusader bloodlines, and a threat tied to the dark Loptr faith, giving the strategy campaign a historical scope beyond a single hero's adventure.

The game also occupies an important place in Fire Emblem history. It was the second series entry made for Super Famicom and followed Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, but its oversized maps, romance and inheritance system, and generational narrative set it apart from its predecessors. The marriage-and-children concept would later be revisited in Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates, while the weapon relationships and character-focused tactical systems became familiar touchstones for the broader series. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, released later for Super Famicom, tells a parallel story within Jugdral's timeline. For players exploring the Japanese Super Famicom catalogue, Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu remains a key example of Nintendo and Intelligent Systems using strategy mechanics to support a sweeping family saga.
