About

Star Fox Super Weekend for the Super NES is a 1993 competition edition of Nintendo's polygonal rail shooter, created for the Super Star Fox Weekend event. Built from the technology and flight action of Star Fox, it turns Fox McCloud's Arwing mission into a tightly timed single-player score challenge. The cartridge is also associated with the Starwing name in PAL territories, where Nintendo used Starwing for the main game, and its altered presentation identifies it as an official competition cartridge rather than a normal retail sequel or port.

Instead of starting with Star Fox's route selection and a full campaign, this version sends the player straight into a four-minute run. Fox pilots the Arwing through three consecutive sections, steering through 3D space while firing at enemies and avoiding hazards. A prominent score display and decreasing timer make the immediate goal unmistakable: destroy targets efficiently, finish encounters quickly, and bank as many points as possible before time expires. There is no leisurely exploration or narrative progression to manage; every maneuver is judged by how it helps a high-score attempt.

The first two portions adapt material from the original game's early action, reshaped for the event's quick format. They retain the fundamental Star Fox rhythm of forward-moving space flight, enemy formations, obstacles, and bosses, but their purpose is different from completing a route through the Lylat system. Fast, accurate shooting preserves valuable seconds. Players who clear the opening challenges efficiently can reach the special final section with more time available, turning mastery of familiar Arwing controls into an advantage on the scoreboard.

That third section gives the competition edition its own identity. Rather than continuing into the regular game's wider campaign, it functions as a bonus scoring area built around flying through rings with the remaining time. The run ends as soon as the clock reaches zero, then presents the player's result before returning to the start for another attempt. The game also allows the player to continue after a crash, so a mistake does not immediately end a run; recovering cleanly and maintaining momentum still matters when every second contributes to the final total.

Nintendo staged Super Star Fox Weekend across participating North American retail locations from April 30 through May 2, 1993, with score competition at its center. A related Starwing Challenge was held in the United Kingdom, while other European promotions used the regional title. After the events, a limited number of the competition cartridges were made available through Nintendo Power, helping establish this unusual SNES release as a focused snapshot of early Star Fox rather than a conventional standalone installment. For players, its appeal lies in repeatable score attacks: the route is brief, the controls are familiar, and improving a run depends on sharper flying, quicker clears, and better use of the final bonus opportunity.
