About
Super Probotector: Alien Rebels is Konami’s 1992 European Super Nintendo run-and-gun shooter, released as the PAL counterpart to Contra III: The Alien Wars. It carries the same six-mission campaign, alien-invasion setting, and fast arcade-style action as that game, but changes the lead heroes into robotic Probotectors. The two playable machines, RD-008 and RC-011, take the place of the human commandos used in other regional editions. Set in the year 2636, the game sends one or two players into a devastated Earth to stop Red Falcon’s forces and reach their alien stronghold.
Most of Super Probotector: Alien Rebels is a side-scrolling assault in which players run, jump, climb, and fire through dense enemy formations. Every mission culminates in a large enemy encounter, while hazards and changing scenery demand quick movement as well as accurate shooting. The campaign moves from the ruined streets of Neo City and an overrun highway to a steel mill, a desert battlefield, and Red Falcon’s main base. It also creates spectacle through sequences involving armoured vehicles, jet bikes, helicopters, and missiles that the Probotectors can use or cling to while fighting.
A major mechanical addition is the ability to carry two weapons at once. Players can switch their active gun during play, then replace it by collecting power-ups dropped from weapon carriers. The available upgrades include homing shots, lasers, wide spread fire, fire weapons, and other specialized attacks, while screen-clearing bombs offer a limited emergency response. The Super Nintendo controller supports rapid fire, jumping, aiming while standing still, and a spinning attack that lets the character shoot with both weapons. Clinging to walls, girders, and ceilings opens up routes and turns movement into part of the combat.
The six stages alternate between four side-view missions and two overhead operations. In the overhead levels, the Super NES presentation rotates around the player as they search for assigned targets, with a map and directional indicators helping them navigate. These stages use a barrier to protect against enemy shots and ask players to clear objectives rather than simply push to the right. The game supports solo play and simultaneous two-player cooperation. Its two multiplayer options alter the overhead sections: players can either fight on separate screens or share a single view.
Super Probotector: Alien Rebels is part of Konami’s Contra series, following the home-console games Contra and Super C. Its European title and robotic cast follow the earlier Probotector localization approach, while the core scenario and design remain those of Contra III. The PAL edition runs on European Super NES hardware, and its distinctive character redesign makes it a particularly recognizable regional version of the 16-bit game. Later Nintendo cataloguing has also identified Super Probotector: Alien Rebels as the name under which this title was sold in Europe, preserving its connection to the wider Contra lineage.
The game’s focused structure rewards learning stage layouts, weapon behavior, and boss patterns without adding long-form progression systems. Difficulty, starting lives, and sound settings can be adjusted from the options menu, and each difficulty level has its own ending. With its mix of side-scrolling firefights, rotating overhead battles, cooperative play, and vehicle set pieces, Super Probotector: Alien Rebels captures a compact 16-bit interpretation of the series’ alien-war premise while retaining a regional identity of its own.
