About
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for PSP is a 2007 tactical shooter from High Voltage Software, published by Ubisoft. Although it shares a name with the contemporaneous console and PC releases, this PlayStation Portable entry was designed as its own game rather than a straight conversion. It brings Captain Scott Mitchell and the Ghosts' near-future military world to Sony's handheld with an original operation built around stopping guerrillas who are moving advanced weapons to rebel forces.
The campaign casts Mitchell as the central operative in a conflict connected to the wider Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter storyline. Instead of recreating the main GRAW 2 campaign, the PSP version follows the trail of the weapons supply in Central America. Its missions move through jungles, swamps, towns, and military installations, giving the portable story a distinct setting while retaining the series' fictionalized near-future military technology and radio-driven atmosphere.
Combat is more direct than in the larger console versions. Players handle Mitchell's movement, aiming, weapon changes, grenades, and explosives, and can play from either a first-person or third-person view. The arsenal includes assault rifles, sniper rifles, silenced submachine guns, a launcher, and weapons collected from fallen enemies. Different tools suit different ranges and situations, while enemies can seek cover or drop prone under fire. Progress comes from clearing hostile positions, protecting objectives, and working through the campaign's largely linear mission sequence.
Advanced support equipment gives the PSP game its Ghost Recon identity. Mitchell can call in an overhead drone to strike targets and request naval artillery, so planning when to use limited fire support becomes part of an encounter rather than simply relying on rifle fire. That high-tech assistance makes the hero unusually self-sufficient, but the handheld game does not reproduce the console editions' broad squad-command systems. It is therefore best understood as a focused, portable action shooter with tactical options, not as the same experience found on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Windows.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 on PSP also supports the entire story campaign in two-player wireless cooperative play. A second player can join the operation locally, while the game does not include the competitive multiplayer modes associated with many other Ghost Recon releases. The co-op option, original PSP-specific story, selectable camera views, varied weaponry, and remote support tools distinguish this version as the franchise's first appearance on the platform.
Released in North America on August 23, 2007, this PSP edition arrived during a period when Ubisoft was adapting major Tom Clancy brands for handheld play. It remains a notably separate branch of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2: High Voltage Software built a compact mission-based game around Scott Mitchell's equipment and the series' military-fiction setting, rather than attempting to compress the console sequel wholesale onto a portable system.
