About
Samurai Warriors: State of War for PSP is Koei and Omega Force’s 2005–2006 portable entry in the samurai-focused Warriors series. Released first in Japan in December 2005 as Geki Sengoku Musou and in North America in March 2006, it returns to the Sengoku, or Warring States, era of Japanese history. Rather than simply shrinking the original console game for Sony’s handheld, State of War reshapes its large-scale action around short tactical turns and compact battles designed for portable play.
Players select from a roster of historical-inspired warriors and follow campaigns tied to the rival powers and conflicts of feudal Japan. The cast includes familiar Samurai Warriors figures such as Yukimura Sanada, Nobunaga Oda, Kenshin Uesugi, Shingen Takeda, Oichi, and Hanzō Hattori, while further characters are unlocked through play. Individual scenarios frame battles with dialogue and objectives, so the focus is not only on defeating an opposing commander but also on deciding how to move an army across a contested map.
Each mission begins in the Strategy Phase. The battlefield is divided into a grid of territories, with friendly and enemy-held squares, officers, strongholds, treasure, and objectives displayed on an overhead map. Movement is turn-based, and the route chosen can matter: terrain and controlled territory affect the available advance, while objectives can include opening a path or changing the conditions of a crossing. Charms can be used before a clash to provide an advantage, adding a limited preparation layer to the campaign map.
Entering an occupied square switches to the Action Phase, where State of War becomes a third-person crowd-combat game. The chosen warrior cuts through enemy soldiers and officers with weapon combos, special attacks, and the series’ Musou power when its gauge is available. These encounters are concise compared with the continuous battles of the console Samurai Warriors games, often asking the player to accomplish a goal or defeat enough opponents within a time limit. The split between map decisions and real-time combat is the defining PSP adaptation, turning a broader campaign into a sequence of bite-sized engagements.
Weapons, abilities, and companion officers give the action side additional room to develop. Players can equip unlocked weapons and recruit a sub-officer to fight alongside the main character; these allies bring their own qualities and can grow through use. The game’s vault records discovered equipment and officers, encouraging repeated missions and experimentation with different combinations. Story Mode provides the principal campaigns, while Free Mode lets players revisit available battles with different characters and difficulty settings.
State of War also uses the PSP’s local wireless capabilities for competitive multiplayer. Its Ad Hoc options include modes in which players race to defeat rival captains or collect an opponent’s dropped gold, supporting battles beyond the single-player campaigns. With its strategic grid, sub-officer system, and portable multiplayer, Samurai Warriors: State of War stands apart from the original PlayStation 2 and Xbox Samurai Warriors even though it shares the series’ Sengoku setting, recognizable heroes, and fast Musou-style combat.
