About

X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse for PSP is a 2005 action role-playing game from Vicarious Visions and Activision, adapting Raven Software's larger console sequel for Sony's handheld. It continues the story of X-Men Legends with a Marvel cast drawn from both the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. Their uneasy alliance is forced by Apocalypse, whose campaign threatens mutants and humanity alike. The PlayStation Portable edition arrived later in 2005 and was designed to preserve the team's real-time, party-based combat while adding material tailored to the portable release.

The campaign lets players assemble a squad of up to four mutants from a broad roster, choose one hero to control directly, and change the active character as a battle demands. Each mutant has a distinct set of powers, so a group built around close-range damage plays differently from one that relies on ranged attacks, movement abilities, or crowd control. Attacks, movement, and special powers are used in real time against groups of enemies, while teammates fight alongside the currently selected hero. Experience gained through missions raises character levels and can be spent to strengthen and customize their available mutant powers.

Equipment collected along the way provides another layer of party building, and coordinated abilities can be used to create powerful team attacks. The game also gives players a headquarters between story missions, offering a calmer space to manage the roster, review unlocked material, and prepare a preferred group for the next assignment. Optional activities include Danger Room challenges, while the PSP version also includes comic-book-themed missions. Those extra scenarios draw on well-known X-Men stories and expand the handheld game's side content beyond the main campaign.

Rise of Apocalypse begins with X-Men members such as Cyclops, Storm, and Wolverine joining Magneto, Mystique, and Sabretooth at a military installation in Greenland. Their immediate goal is to rescue Professor X, but the operation opens into a wider conflict with Apocalypse and his forces. The party travels through recognizable Marvel settings including Genosha, the Savage Land, New York City, and Egypt. Along the way, the alliance confronts villains and Apocalypse's Horsemen while trying to stop a plan that involves captured mutants and ancient technology.

The PSP edition is not simply the same roster in a smaller package. Vicarious Visions added four playable characters exclusive to the portable version and nine additional side missions, giving returning players reasons to explore its version specifically. It also supports multiplayer through PSP ad hoc and infrastructure modes, extending the cooperative emphasis of the series to handheld play. The controls were adjusted for the PSP hardware, but the central aim remains managing a complementary mutant team rather than treating every character as interchangeable.

As the direct follow-up to 2004's X-Men Legends, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse expands the earlier game's premise by putting traditional enemies on the same side against a greater danger. Its mix of Marvel locations, character collecting, leveling, equipment, and four-member combat made it a notable bridge between the first X-Men Legends and the later Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games. For PSP players, the exclusive characters and comic missions make this release a distinct version of the superhero action RPG rather than only a portable conversion.
