About

The King of Fighters '94 on PSP brings SNK’s landmark 1994 Neo Geo fighting game to Sony’s handheld through the NEOGEO Station line. Developed and originally published by SNK, it is the first entry in The King of Fighters series and a two-player competitive fighter built around a grand invitational tournament. The PSP edition arrived on 22 December 2010, preserving the original game rather than using the later PlayStation 2 remake, The King of Fighters '94 Re-Bout. It is a meeting point for many of SNK’s best-known characters and series, presented in the fast, sprite-based style of the Neo Geo original.

At its core, The King of Fighters '94 uses a four-button layout for light and strong punches and kicks. Each combatant has normal attacks, throws, command techniques, special moves, and a Super Desperation Move. A power gauge fills when attacks are blocked or damage is taken, and players can also charge it deliberately, leaving themselves exposed while they do. Reaching maximum power briefly strengthens standard attacks and enables a super move; a fighter in critical health can access that powerful attack as well. Dodges, defensive timing, jump attacks, and input-based specials give every bout a tactical rhythm beyond simply trading blows.

Its defining idea is the Team Battle System. Rather than selecting one fighter for a conventional sequence of rounds, each player chooses one of eight fixed three-person teams and sets the order in which those fighters will enter. When one character is knocked out, the next teammate steps in, while the victor receives a small health recovery before continuing. Win by defeating all three opponents. That format makes the chosen order meaningful: an early fighter might need to overcome a difficult matchup, while a stronger remaining character can be saved for later. The original game does not allow freely assembled teams, so the pre-set groups are part of its identity.

The roster combines established SNK stars with fighters created for this debut. Fatal Fury contributes Terry and Andy Bogard alongside Joe Higashi, while Art of Fighting supplies Ryo Sakazaki, Robert Garcia, and Takuma Sakazaki. Ralf Jones, Clark Steel, and Heidern represent Ikari Warriors, and Athena Asamiya, Sie Kensou, and Chin Gentsai arrive from Psycho Soldier. The game also introduces series lead Kyo Kusanagi, his Japan Team partners Benimaru Nikaido and Goro Daimon, the Women Fighters Team, the Korea Team, and the American Sports Team. The result is a broad cast of 24 selectable fighters across eight teams, with Rugal Bernstein waiting as the final opponent.

The tournament story gives that crossover a single frame. Rugal, a powerful criminal who has grown bored with ordinary competition, invites fighters from around the world to a new King of Fighters event. Teams battle through national-themed stages before the winners are drawn into Rugal’s real challenge aboard his aircraft carrier, the Black Noah. Kyo’s confrontation with Rugal also establishes threads that later games develop. The story is delivered through the game’s opening, team endings, and boss sequence, keeping the focus on the clashes between combatants from previously separate SNK worlds.

On PSP, The King of Fighters '94 is a handheld version of the Neo Geo game offered through NEOGEO Station, with one- or two-player play and ad hoc wireless matches between PSP systems. Its release lets players experience the original 1994 ruleset: the preset teams, the distinct stage presentation, and the early form of systems that would become central to a long-running fighting series. It is also a useful historical snapshot of SNK’s approach at the time, drawing characters from Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Ikari Warriors, and Psycho Soldier while establishing an entirely new tournament series around team competition.
