About
Urakata Hakuoki is a Japan-only PlayStation Portable dramatic adventure set in the Bakumatsu-era world of Idea Factory’s Hakuoki series. Developed by Zerodiv and published by Idea Factory under the Otomate label, it launched in Japan on June 27, 2013. Rather than retell the original Hakuoki heroine’s story, this PSP entry presents a separate, non-canonical tale in the same fictional universe. Its protagonist is Kozue Kirishima, whose default name can be changed by the player.
Kozue and her older brother keep the dojo left by their late parents, but their ordinary life collapses when a white-haired creature in Shinsengumi clothing attacks. Her brother dies protecting her, leaving Kozue determined to take up a sword and seek the truth behind the killing. The premise places a personal revenge story beside the turbulent late-shogunate Kyoto associated with Hakuoki, blending historical names and atmosphere with the series’ supernatural Rasetsu element.
Urakata Hakuoki differs from the largely text-driven mainline otome games by building its story around free movement and turn-based command battles. Players guide Kozue across a map of Kyoto, where conversations with characters can open requests, advance the narrative, reveal special events, and improve relationships. The structure makes time in town part of progression instead of simply a menu between scenes.
Exploration extends beyond the city to enemy-filled field areas. Contact with a roaming foe begins a battle, and searching these locations can uncover equipment and other useful finds that are unavailable in town. Combat uses accessible turn-based commands, with allies able to protect Kozue and perform techniques presented with animated 3D models. An automatic-battle option is also available for players who want to move through routine fights more quickly.
Preparation has a meaningful place in the adventure. Tea houses and general stores sell consumable items and accessories, while treasure and completed requests provide further rewards. Items can restore health, cure status problems, or damage opponents, and the game includes more than 100 varieties of accessories with effects such as raising statistics or increasing battle earnings. Successful requests may also grant money, equipment, affection, or new techniques, encouraging players to speak with Kyoto’s residents and follow optional leads.
As a single-player PSP release, Urakata Hakuoki combines relationship-focused dramatic storytelling with map exploration, quest rewards, and RPG-style systems. Its alternate heroine and revenge-driven opening distinguish it from the principal Hakuoki narrative, while its use of the franchise’s Bakumatsu setting and supernatural conflict keeps it connected to the wider series. The result is a compact portable adventure for players interested in a more action-oriented side story from the Hakuoki world.
