About
Spyro: Year of the Dragon for PlayStation is a 3D platform adventure released in 2000. Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, it is the third PlayStation entry in the original Spyro the Dragon series. The purple dragon returns alongside Sparx, his dragonfly companion, when dragon eggs are stolen during the once-every-twelve-years Year of the Dragon celebration. The pursuit takes the pair from the Dragon Realms into the Forgotten Realms, a group of colorful lands controlled by the Sorceress and her Rhynoc forces.
The main goal is to recover the scattered eggs. Spyro travels from hub worlds through portals into individual realms, searching the scenery, helping residents, clearing challenges, and overcoming enemies to earn more of them. Progress is tied to the number of eggs found, although the full set is not required to see the main ending. Gems are another major collectible: Spyro gathers them from containers and other hiding places, then gives some to the entrepreneurial bear Moneybags for access to captives, paths, and opportunities that expand the adventure. An in-game atlas records the objectives still unfinished in visited areas, making the search for complete completion easier to follow.
Spyro himself supplies the core platforming moves. He can breathe fire at many enemies, charge with his horns, jump and glide across gaps, and later use swimming and diving to reach underwater spaces. Sparx functions as a visible health indicator, changing color as Spyro takes hits; finding fodder restores him. The levels use these abilities for exploration as well as combat, with routes, ledges, hidden objects, and enemies arranged around Spyro’s movement. Temporary power-up gates add special abilities for particular situations, encouraging players to look for ways to use a brief advantage before it expires.
Year of the Dragon broadens the series formula by introducing playable supporting characters. Spyro frees Sheila the Kangaroo, Sergeant Byrd the Penguin, Bentley the Yeti, and Agent 9 the Monkey during the journey, and each later opens a dedicated section built around a different move set. Sheila can make high, double-jump-like leaps, Sergeant Byrd combines flight with missiles, Bentley relies on his strength, and Agent 9 brings ranged action. These episodes are not substitutes for Spyro’s main role; instead, they add alternate ways to navigate the same world and make certain eggs depend on revisiting places after another character has been unlocked.
The game also packs its worlds with side challenges. Races, skateboarding, shooting segments, and other self-contained minigames provide egg rewards and break up the standard collecting. Spyro meets Hunter and Bianca as the story develops, while the Sorceress is revealed to have a powerful reason for wanting the young dragons. The result is a single-player quest that uses a light fantasy story to connect a substantial range of locations and activities, from ordinary platform stages to character-specific missions.
As the final Spyro game made by Insomniac for the original PlayStation, Spyro: Year of the Dragon arrived late in the console’s life, shortly before its successor took over Sony’s hardware line. The North American release appeared in October 2000, with the European edition following in November; later budget editions and PlayStation digital releases extended its availability. Its original PlayStation adventure was subsequently recreated as one part of the 2018 Spyro Reignited Trilogy, but the PS1 version remains the conclusion to Insomniac’s initial three-game run: a broad collectible platformer built around flight, exploration, allies, and rescuing every last dragon egg.
