About
Creatures: Raised in Space for PlayStation is a 2002 artificial-life simulation from Elo Interactive Media, published in North America by Conspiracy Entertainment. Also associated with the title Creatures 3, it adapts the long-running Creatures series for Sony original PlayStation hardware. Rather than putting the player in direct command of a conventional hero, the game casts them as Scrubby, a fairy-like caretaker responsible for helping a colony of Norns survive aboard the Shee Ark, an enormous spacecraft filled with enclosed habitats.
The central objective is to reopen the Ark terrariums and make the ship safe for its Norn population. Scrubby can guide and influence a selected creature, but Norns must learn useful behavior instead of instantly obeying every instruction. Feeding them, monitoring their condition, and encouraging appropriate actions are all part of everyday care. The colony needs food and medicinal plants to stay healthy, while hazards in later areas make neglect and poor decisions costly.
Progress through Creatures: Raised in Space revolves around keys that unlock doors and passages between environments. Blue Energy Stars are scattered around the Ark, and trained Norns can carry them to a machine. Depositing 25 stars produces a key, but the stars do not last forever, so teaching a creature to fetch them and managing its route are important practical tasks. This structure gives the PlayStation game a clearer sequence of goals than a simple virtual-pet sandbox while retaining the series focus on observation, training, and creature welfare.
Norns grow, can become ill or tired, and eventually face the limits of their lifespan. The game also ties breeding to heart collection: each Norn must gather ten hearts before it can become fertile. Successful care therefore extends beyond a single creature, since the player is working to establish and maintain a population. The Ark includes the friendly Norns as well as the series familiar Ettins and Grendels, with the latter presenting a threat to the creatures under Scrubby's care.
PlayStation controls are built around Scrubby rather than a mouse cursor. The face buttons handle positive or negative reinforcement, picking up or using objects, while shoulder buttons call a selected Norn over, send it away, or prompt it to interact with an object. This direct pad-based interface supports the game’s unusual mix of caretaking and puzzle-like navigation: the player supplies guidance and feedback, but the creatures carry out the learned actions within the world.
Although it shares its science-fiction setting and Shee Ark premise with the PC-era Creatures 3, Creatures: Raised in Space is a distinct console version with redesigned systems for its platform. Its blend of creature raising, exploration, environmental danger, and key-making gives it a specific place in the series: a PlayStation follow-up that turns the task of nurturing Norns into a structured mission to restore their spaceborne home.
