About
Medal of Honor: Underground for PlayStation is a World War II first-person shooter released in 2000. Developed by DreamWorks Interactive and published by EA Games, it is the second Medal of Honor game and serves as a prequel to the 1999 PlayStation original. Rather than returning to Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson, the campaign puts French Resistance operative Manon Batiste at the center of the action. The story begins during the occupation of France and follows Manon's path from local resistance work to assignments for the American Office of Strategic Services.
The PlayStation game is mission-based, asking players to navigate enemy-held locations from a first-person perspective while dealing with guards, soldiers, and other threats. Progress is built around more than simply reaching an exit: objectives can require recovering important items or documents, using objects in the environment, opening routes, and destroying selected targets. Health, ammunition, alert enemies, and the layout of each location all shape the pace, so a careful approach can matter as much as quick reactions. The campaign's period weaponry gives its firefights a distinct late-1990s console FPS character.
Manon's operations move beyond a single battlefield. Her work takes her through occupied Europe and North Africa as she confronts German forces and collaborationist enemies, pursues resistance goals, and helps undermine Axis plans. The game frames these assignments as covert wartime operations, mixing direct combat with infiltration and sabotage. Some situations let Manon use a disguise to enter restricted spaces, adding a different kind of pressure to missions where observing patrols and choosing when to act can be important.
Medal of Honor: Underground expands the original game's formula with friendly characters who can assist in certain situations and with encounters involving military vehicles. Tanks and half-tracks are among the hazards faced during the campaign, while the levels also make room for varied objectives and settings instead of presenting every stage as a straightforward assault. Manon had appeared as an allied contact in the first Medal of Honor, and making her the playable lead gives Underground its own viewpoint within the early history of the series.
DreamWorks Interactive developed the PlayStation release while the studio was associated with DreamWorks, and its credits include Michael Giacchino as composer. The production drew on consultation and archival support connected to the French Resistance and the OSS; Manon's character was inspired in part by OSS veteran Helene Deschamps Adams. Those influences inform the game's fictional story without turning it into a documentary, placing its missions against the recognizable backdrop of the war in Europe.
Completing the main campaign also unlocks Panzerknacker Unleashed, an intentionally non-canonical bonus scenario that shifts away from the historical tone. In it, Jimmy Patterson returns for an unusual castle-set challenge featuring fantastical enemies and a separate objective. A later Game Boy Advance adaptation was developed by Rebellion Developments, but Medal of Honor: Underground on PS1 is the original version: the DreamWorks Interactive first-person campaign that established Manon Batiste as one of the series' recurring characters.
