About

Metal Slug X PS1 brings SNK's 2D run-and-gun series to the original PlayStation in a 2001 port published in North America by Agetec. Developed by SNK, it is the 1999 enhanced revision of Metal Slug 2: Super Vehicle-001/II, rather than a separate sequel. The game preserves the series' hand-drawn arcade action: one or two players advance from left to right through hostile territory, rescuing prisoners, collecting supplies and battling extravagant bosses amid dense animated scenery.

The central objective is simple but demanding. Players choose from four Peregrine Falcon and S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. operatives—Marco Rossi, Tarma Roving, Eri Kasamoto and Fiolina Germi—and fight through a six-mission campaign to stop General Morden's renewed uprising. A standard pistol has unlimited ammunition, while pick-ups add temporary tools such as heavy machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, flamethrowers and laser weapons. Grenades, close-range knife attacks and carefully timed jumps expand the basic shooting controls, while a single hit normally costs a life and returns the player to the pistol.

Missions continually change the pressure on the player. Foot soldiers, armored vehicles, aircraft, creatures and huge mechanical bosses arrive from several directions, and much of the backdrop can be destroyed or searched for items. Hostages are not merely scenery: freeing POWs can produce weapons, bombs, score items or other assistance, and rescued prisoners count toward an end-of-mission bonus if the player survives the stage. The familiar SV-001 Metal Slug tank adds cannon fire, heavy-machine-gun shots and protection, while other vehicles and special transformations make individual sections play differently from a straightforward infantry assault.

Metal Slug X revises Metal Slug 2 with altered enemy and boss placement, a higher enemy presence, extra POWs and food, and changed times of day across several locations. It also adds weapons including the Iron Lizard, Enemy Chaser, Super Grenade and Drop Shot, alongside heavier variants of several existing arms. Food can turn an operative into the series' heavyset form, changing the look and behavior of attacks. These adjustments, plus remixed music and changed environmental surprises, make X its own version of the campaign rather than simply Metal Slug 2 under a different title.

The PlayStation release follows the arcade and Neo Geo game but adds a home-oriented Combat School mode, allowing players to revisit challenges with specific objectives after experiencing the main action. Its campaign supports solo play or local two-player cooperation, so teams can divide enemy fire, revive the series' frantic rhythm together and compare results at the mission tally. The game’s PlayStation timing places it after the original 1999 arcade and Neo Geo release; its North American edition arrived on April 14, 2001, while the Japanese PlayStation edition had appeared earlier that year.

Metal Slug X sits between Metal Slug 2 and Metal Slug 3 in SNK's long-running action series. Its cartoon-like animation, military parody and escalating battles still revolve around clear arcade fundamentals: move forward, avoid incoming fire, choose the right weapon for the immediate threat and preserve lives long enough to reach the next boss. For PlayStation owners, the port offers the enhanced Metal Slug 2 campaign together with Combat School practice and challenge content on one disc.
