About
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete for PlayStation is a story-driven Japanese role-playing game and the PS1 remake of Game Arts' 1994 Sega CD sequel, released in North America by Working Designs in 2000. Set one thousand years after Lunar: Silver Star Story, it follows young adventurer Hiro and his pink, dragon-like companion Ruby after an expedition leads them to Lucia, a mysterious visitor from the distant Blue Star. Lucia asks Hiro to guide her to the Goddess Althena, but their journey quickly becomes tangled in prophecies, political power, and the threat of a force that could remake Lunar itself.
Players explore Lunar from an overhead view, moving through towns, ruins, towers, caves, and wilderness while speaking to residents, finding equipment, and pursuing story objectives. The adventure is mostly linear but encourages careful preparation between major encounters: shops provide weapons and supplies, chests reward curiosity, and party members gain experience through combat. Its presentation alternates between in-game dialogue and animated, voiced sequences, giving major story turns a more theatrical role than simple text-box narration alone.
Battles use turn-based commands with visible positioning. A character may need to move into range before attacking, while magic, special techniques, items, and defensive choices provide options against groups of enemies and bosses. Hiro fights with sword and boomerang attacks, and his companions bring contrasting abilities, from healing and offensive magic to martial arts. As the party grows stronger, new skills broaden tactical choices, and the Crest System adds another layer by allowing characters to equip crests for stat benefits and advanced magic combinations.
Hiro and Lucia are joined by an ensemble whose personal conflicts are woven into the larger quest. Ronfar is a former priest with healing talents, Lemina is a gifted but commercially minded mage, Jean is a performer hiding a painful past, and White Knight Leo begins as a determined pursuer of the group. Their travels lead toward the holy city of Pentagulia and challenge the authority of the figure claiming to be Althena. Familiar faces and ideas from the earlier Lunar adventure return, but Eternal Blue Complete is built around a new party and a separate crisis centered on Lucia and the malevolent Zophar.
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete is not the original Sega CD release: it is the later remake first issued for Sega Saturn in Japan and then PlayStation, with the PS1 version becoming the basis for Working Designs' North American edition. The Complete version refreshes the artwork and audio, expands the script, and uses more elaborate animated sequences. Its character designs are associated with series artist Toshiyuki Kubooka, while its combination of illustrated portraits, animation, spoken scenes, and fantasy travel gives the PlayStation release a deliberately anime-inspired identity.
The North American PlayStation package was also notable for Working Designs' collector-focused treatment, which included the game in a multi-disc presentation with extras rather than a bare standard release. Beneath that packaging is a substantial single-player RPG about companionship, faith, and the value of human choice. For players exploring the Lunar series on Sony's original console, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete continues the world of Silver Star Story while offering its own long-form journey from an archaeological discovery to a confrontation with a world-threatening enemy.
