About

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a 1997 action role-playing game from Konami for the original PlayStation. It follows the events of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and places Alucard, Dracula's half-vampire son, at the center of a new investigation into the return of his father's castle.

Set in 1796, the adventure begins after Richter Belmont disappears and Dracula's castle rises again. Alucard enters its halls to learn what has happened, encountering Maria Renard and eventually uncovering a threat tied to Richter and Dracula's resurrection.

Rather than moving through a fixed sequence of stages, players explore a large interconnected castle. Locked routes, unreachable ledges, and concealed rooms encourage returning to earlier areas after finding new equipment or abilities. The map steadily records explored territory, making discovery a core part of the journey.

Alucard can wield swords, shields, sub-weapons, and many other pieces of gear, while an inventory and equipment system shape his approach to combat. Defeated enemies award experience, allowing him to level up and improve his attributes. Items, relics, and permanent health or heart upgrades further expand his capabilities.

Several of Alucard's powers also change how the castle can be navigated. Transformations into a bat, wolf, and mist open routes that were previously inaccessible, and familiar companions can assist in battle and exploration. These abilities turn progression into a process of gradually mastering the castle's layout.

The game retains Castlevania's gothic action, with monsters, bosses, traps, and hidden weapons filling its 2D environments, while pairing that action with role-playing systems. Its structure made exploration, backtracking, and character growth as important as direct combat.

A key turning point reveals an additional inverted version of the castle, expanding the quest with new areas and encounters. Optional discoveries, alternate character modes, and a wide range of equipment give repeat playthroughs different paths through the adventure.

Symphony of the Night became one of the most influential entries in the series. Its blend of side-scrolling action, open-ended castle exploration, ability-gated progression, and character development helped establish the design approach later widely known as Metroidvania.
