About

Toriko: Gourmet Survival! is a Japan-only PlayStation Portable action game based on the Toriko manga and anime, released by Bandai Namco Games on August 4, 2011. Developed by Natsume Atari, it translates the series' food-obsessed world into a compact “gourmet hunting action” adventure. Rather than treating cuisine as a simple reward, the game makes the search for ingredients central to its design: Toriko ventures into dangerous territory, confronts oversized creatures, and brings back the materials needed for an ever more ambitious full-course menu.

The adventure is set on Megamori Island, an original island setting packed with untamed environments and hostile wildlife. Toriko is accompanied by chef Komatsu, whose cooking gives the expedition a practical purpose beyond simply defeating opponents. Each outing combines exploration, combat, and ingredient gathering. Players seek out beasts and other foodstuffs, use Toriko's attacks to overcome threats, and collect what is needed to satisfy the next request. That loop gives the game a clear rhythm: head out from camp, learn the lay of an area, return with ingredients, and turn those finds into progress.

Its progression is organized around Survival mode. The Order option advances the story through a sequence of requests, while Free play lets players revisit explored territory more openly. Completing orders unlocks dishes for the full-course creation process, tying the menu-building goal directly to success in the field. Food prepared by Komatsu strengthens Toriko, so cooking is part of the character-growth system rather than a detached minigame. The result is a licensed action game where hunting, collecting, and preparing ingredients are deliberately interlocked.

Combat is built for portable, direct control. Toriko can attack the island's creatures, use special techniques, and capture or obtain ingredients from the wildlife he encounters. The game also tracks survival-oriented status through gauges, including a stomach-based health measure, calories connected to growth, and a tension resource for stronger actions. These systems reflect the source material's emphasis on appetite and physical power while giving each trip into Megamori Island a reason to balance fighting with efficient gathering.

Toriko: Gourmet Survival! arrived during the early run of the 2011 television anime and was the first video game adaptation of the franchise. It was released for PSP in Japan and was followed on the same system by Toriko: Gourmet Survival! 2 in 2012. The original supports local wireless Ad Hoc play for up to two people, adding a cooperative option to its island expeditions. For players looking for a PSP game with an unusual theme, it stands apart by making the pursuit of rare ingredients and the creation of a dream meal as important as the action itself.
