About

WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008 featuring ECW for PSP brings THQ and Yuke's long-running WWE wrestling series to Sony's PlayStation Portable. Released in North America in November 2007, it is the fourth SmackDown vs. Raw game and the ninth major WWE game in the wider SmackDown line. The portable edition follows the same 2007 season of WWE programming represented by its console counterparts, combining the Raw and SmackDown brands with ECW, then newly re-established as WWE's third brand.

At its core, the game is a 3D professional-wrestling simulation built around matches in and around the ring. Players select a WWE Superstar, Diva, or unlockable Legend, use the PSP's buttons and analog controls to strike, grapple, run, climb, perform aerial attacks, attempt pins, and apply submissions, and build momentum toward signature moves and finishers. Exhibition play supplies the direct route to individual bouts, while championship matches let players challenge for the titles included in the game. Match rules, opponents, and ring conditions give the roster different ways to compete rather than reducing every contest to a standard one-on-one fight.

The biggest mechanical addition is the Superstar Fighting Style system. Wrestlers are assigned primary and secondary styles drawn from eight categories: Powerhouse, Showman, Hardcore, Dirty, Brawler, High-Flyer, Submission, and Technical. Those classifications affect useful strengths and special abilities, encouraging players to consider a performer's intended approach when choosing tactics. A high-flyer is suited to dives and quick movement, for example, while a powerhouse emphasizes forceful offense. The new Struggle Submission system also makes submission encounters more active, asking both players to work the analog control as one applies pressure and the other tries to escape.

ECW's arrival gives WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008 featuring ECW a distinct place in the series. Its roster stands alongside Raw and SmackDown talent, and the ECW presence carries over into arenas, championships, and the availability of weapons in suitable matches. Players can take the action outside the ropes and use objects such as chairs, tables, guitars, and other ringside weapons where the rules allow. That blend of conventional WWE presentation and the harder-edged ECW material broadens the game's match options without changing its focus on timed reversals, momentum, and the race to earn a decisive pinfall or submission.

For longer single-player play, WWE 24/7 combines ideas previously associated with Season and General Manager modes. A player can pursue a wrestler's path toward Legend status by winning matches, managing rivalries and alliances, and making choices between events, or take a management role connected to the brands. Tournament options provide structured competitions, including formats based on WWE concepts such as King of the Ring and Money in the Bank. Create-a-Superstar and related customization features further let players build a competitor for these modes and the wider match selection.

The PSP version was developed by Yuke's rather than the separate Nintendo DS edition, and it shares much of the series' established portable presentation and control approach from the preceding PSP releases. It also has a small handheld-specific set of unlockable Legends, including Eddie Guerrero and Jim Neidhart. That detail, along with the compact version of the 2007 roster and feature set, makes it more than simply a differently packaged release: it is a PSP entry designed to carry the Raw, SmackDown, and ECW era into the system's library.

As the follow-up to WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 and the predecessor to WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, this installment captures a transitional WWE period. Its Fighting Styles, analog-focused submission contests, three-brand roster, and 24/7 framework define its identity. For PSP players, WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008 featuring ECW offers a substantial licensed wrestling game centered on familiar WWE personalities, customizable encounters, and the strategic differences between the competitors who enter the ring.
