About

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow for PSP is a 2007 third-person stealth-action game from Sony Computer Entertainment's Bend Studio. It follows 2006's Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and brings agent Gabe Logan back to the PlayStation Portable for another international espionage operation. The PSP release is the original version of Logan's Shadow; a PlayStation 2 conversion followed in 2010. Set within the series' web of intelligence agencies, rival powers and terrorist threats, the game combines methodical infiltration with rapid firefights while putting Gabe's trust in his longtime partner Lian Xing under pressure.

The single-player campaign is played from an over-the-shoulder perspective. Missions ask Gabe to move through guarded ships, urban areas, prisons and other hostile locations, pursuing objectives such as reaching secured sites, recovering information, eliminating threats and escaping pursuit. Players use the PSP's controls to aim firearms, switch weapons and equipment, interact with the environment, and move carefully through enemy territory. Checkpoints and mission structure keep the focus on a directed spy-thriller campaign rather than an open-world design.

Stealth remains a central option, but Logan's Shadow expands the ways confrontations can unfold. Gabe can use cover to protect himself, lean around obstacles, and fire without fully exposing his position. The game also allows him to take enemies hostage as human shields, creating a close-quarters tactical choice during a gunfight. Its melee actions and contextual sequences add further variety when a mission brings Gabe into confined spaces or face-to-face with an opponent. Health recovers over time, encouraging players to reassess their position after a dangerous exchange instead of relying only on pickups.

One of the PSP game's notable additions is underwater action. Gabe can swim through submerged sections, confront enemies below the surface and investigate locations inaccessible by ordinary routes. Bend Studio also used Havok physics and the PSP's 333 MHz operating mode to support more responsive environmental interactions, water effects and enemy behavior than in the team's earlier handheld Syphon Filter. These technical choices serve the missions' shifting pace: a quiet infiltration can lead into a chase, a firefight, a hand-to-hand encounter or an aquatic sequence without abandoning the series' espionage identity.

The story was written by Greg Rucka and begins with an attack on a U.S. Navy vessel in the Indian Ocean. Gabe investigates the theft of sensitive material tied to a dangerous device, a case that takes him across several regions while competing intelligence interests close in. Lian's apparent connection to a Chinese scientist makes her loyalty a crucial question for Gabe and for the Agency. Familiar figures including Teresa Lipan and Lawrence Mujari return, while new allies and adversaries complicate the investigation. The narrative continues threads from Dark Mirror, so players familiar with that PSP game can better recognize the relationships and unresolved tensions behind the mission.

Logan's Shadow also includes competitive multiplayer for the PSP through local Ad Hoc and online Infrastructure play. It offers Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Rogue Agent alongside the new Sabotage and Retrieval modes. Sabotage turns the contest into an attack-and-defense race involving bomb codes and warheads, while Retrieval asks teams to take a beacon from the opposing base and bring it home. A related Combat Ops component lets players assemble and share custom multiplayer missions using existing maps, objectives, equipment, factions and spawn points.

As the sixth main Syphon Filter release and the second made specifically for PSP, Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow shows how Bend Studio adapted a PlayStation espionage series to a handheld without reducing it to brief arcade missions. Its mixture of cover shooting, stealth, close combat and underwater objectives gives the campaign several distinct rhythms, while its multiplayer modes extend the package beyond Gabe Logan's story. For players exploring the Syphon Filter series on PlayStation Portable, it stands as the direct continuation of Dark Mirror and the last original entry in the franchise's original run.
