Syphon Filter : Dark Mirror

2006 · Sony · Third-Person Shooter · 1-8 players

About

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror for PSP is a 2006 third-person stealth-action shooter from SCE Bend Studio, published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the fifth Syphon Filter game and returns secret operative Gabe Logan to the center of a globe-spanning conspiracy. Originally released in North America in March 2006, the handheld adventure follows Gabe and the International Presidential Consulting Agency as a raid on an Alaskan refinery leads to Red Section and the dangerous Project Dark Mirror.

The story campaign is built around directed missions in which stealth, observation, and firefights all have a place. Gabe commonly infiltrates guarded compounds, gathers intelligence, rescues allies, and pursues high-value targets. Missions give objectives beyond simply clearing enemies, and the route through an area can offer choices: a player may attempt a quiet entry and keep alarms down, or use weapons to force a way through. Lian Xing, a familiar member of Gabe’s team, is playable in selected missions.

Dark Mirror expands the series’ equipment-driven approach. Gabe’s arsenal includes his signature Taser, conventional firearms, and the MB150 modular sniper rifle, which can fire ammunition and specialized darts. Its vision modes serve practical roles in the field: night vision helps in darkness, thermal vision can expose enemies through some surfaces, and infrared can reveal traps and hidden evidence. The rapid traversal line adds another tactical option, letting Gabe slide along a cable while engaging opponents. Cover and corner shooting also help make use of the PSP’s compact controls.

The campaign comprises 28 story missions, supported by tutorial scenarios and a bonus mission. Completed stages can be revisited in Mission Mode with customized weapon loadouts, while ranks, time and score challenges give repeat attempts a goal. Each mission also hides evidence that unlocks extras such as concept art and making-of material. That structure turns the single-player operation into more than a one-time pursuit of its political-intrigue storyline.

Multiplayer was a major feature of the original PSP release. Up to eight players could connect through ad hoc or infrastructure play, with optional PSP Headset voice support. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch provide direct competition, while Rogue Agent makes the active target the only player able to score. Objective mode divides teams into attackers and defenders with opposing tasks, adding mission-style goals to the portable shooter format.

Dark Mirror was Bend Studio’s first Syphon Filter game made for a handheld PlayStation, after the series had moved to PlayStation 2 for Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain. The studio later recalled using the PSP’s capabilities for environmental details such as snow footprints and Peruvian dust. A PlayStation 2 version followed in 2007, and the PSP game was succeeded by Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow in 2007. For PSP players, Dark Mirror stands as a substantial entry in Gabe Logan’s series, combining a full covert-operations campaign with competitive portable multiplayer.
