About
Tom Clancy's EndWar for PSP is a turn-based military strategy game published by Ubisoft in November 2008 and developed by Funatics Software. Set within the Tom Clancy EndWar universe, it imagines a future World War III fought across real-world locations. This PlayStation Portable release is not a reduced version of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC game: it reshapes the series' conflict into a portable, grid-based tactical experience built around deliberate battlefield decisions.
Players choose one of three forces—the United States' Joint Strike Force, the European Federation Enforcers Corps, or Russia's Spetsnaz Brigades—and lead it through its own single-player campaign. The campaigns are connected by the wider war while presenting faction-specific routes through the conflict. The European force is positioned as the most approachable choice, the U.S. campaign as a middle path, and the Russian force as the toughest. Missions send armies into land, air, and naval engagements, with recognizable locations such as Paris and London among the battlegrounds.
Combat unfolds in turns on hexagonal maps. A turn is divided into movement and attack phases, so planning where units will advance matters as much as selecting a target. Units operate in a tactical relationship of strengths and counters, encouraging players to consider terrain, range, and the opposition before committing. The PSP controls replace the voice-command focus of the larger console editions with a direct handheld interface for inspecting the map, choosing units, and issuing orders. Rather than commanding individual soldiers, the player manages military formations and balances offense, defense, and positioning.
Campaign performance carries consequences beyond a single skirmish. Completing missions and optional objectives earns promotions and medals, while progress unlocks bonus maps. The game also includes a rank system and lets players build up their military resources through bases, producing fresh units, repairing damaged equipment, and taking enemy installations. This adds a layer of force management to the tactical battles: an army's available tools and condition can be as important as the immediate exchange of fire.
EndWar on PSP supports both solo and two-player play. Its ready-made scenarios provide battles outside the story campaigns, and its mission editor allows players to create custom maps and scenarios for further matches. The result is a distinct handheld companion to the 2008 EndWar releases: it shares their three-way global conflict and military-fiction setting, but uses simultaneous move-and-attack phases and compact map tactics to make strategy fit the PlayStation Portable.
