About
BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable for PSP brings Arc System Works' first BlazBlue fighting game to Sony's handheld. Developed by Arc System Works and published in North America by Aksys Games, this 2D one-on-one fighter arrived in Japan in February 2010 and North America the following month. It adapts the game that began in arcades in 2008 and appeared on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009, presenting the opening chapter of the BlazBlue series in a portable format.
Matches are fast, side-on duels in which two combatants try to empty the other fighter's life bar before time expires. Every character uses light, medium, heavy, and Drive attacks, with the Drive button forming the center of BlazBlue's character-specific design. Ragna the Bloodedge can recover health through his attacks, while Jin Kisaragi uses ice-based techniques to restrict an opponent. Combining normal strikes, special moves, air attacks, throws, and Drives creates opportunities for extended combos, but the game also gives defenders tools to escape or alter the pace of an exchange.
Its meters make offense and defense a continuing set of choices. Building Heat permits powerful Distortion Drives and the option to spend meter on a Rapid Cancel, interrupting an attack's recovery to continue pressure or alter a combo. Barrier blocking strengthens defense but consumes its own resource; letting that gauge run out leaves a fighter in the vulnerable Danger state. The Guard Libra can also lead to a Barrier Crush after sustained pressure. Barrier Burst can force an opponent away, though using it carries a lasting defensive cost for the round. These systems make positioning, meter management, and reading an opponent as important as executing a command.
The story takes place in December 2199, after a war-ravaged world has come under the control of the Novus Orbis Librarium and its Ars Magus technology. Ragna, known as the Grim Reaper, appears in the hierarchical city of Kagutsuchi after destroying a Librarium branch. An enormous bounty and the power of his Azure Grimoire draw a varied group of rivals, hunters, soldiers, and allies to the city. Story routes follow the roster from different viewpoints, including Noel Vermillion, Rachel Alucard, Taokaka, Tager, Litchi Faye-Ling, Bang Shishigami, Carl Clover and his doll Nirvana, and the mysterious Hakumen and Nu-13.
BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable preserves the full Story mode and voice work of the home release while adapting the controls for PSP. The face buttons map to the four main attacks, the shoulder button handles throws and throw escapes, and configurable controls are available. Its analog-pad shortcut input can trigger designated special moves by direction, offering a more approachable option for players unfamiliar with traditional motion commands. Arcade, Versus, Training, Score Attack, Gallery, and Shop features provide ways to practice, unlock material, and revisit fights, while Ad Hoc multiplayer supports local wireless competition rather than the online play found in the console versions.
The PSP edition also adds Legion Mode, a single-player campaign built around conquering a map. A player begins with one fighter, battles through territories with different enemy groups and conditions, and recruits defeated opponents into an expanding team. Characters retain their current health between uses but can recover while resting, so the mode rewards planning which allies to deploy as well as skill in individual battles. Its inclusion gives Calamity Trigger Portable a distinct progression mode alongside the standard fighting-game options.
Visually, the portable release retains BlazBlue's hand-drawn sprites, dramatic special effects, and anime-styled cast while scaling the presentation to the PSP screen. It is a version of the original Calamity Trigger rather than the later Continuum Shift games, so its roster and systems belong to the series' first installment. For PSP players, it offers a complete entry point to the conflict around Kagutsuchi and a detailed 2D fighter built around sharply differentiated characters, resource-driven combat, and both solo and local multiplayer play.
