About
Blitz: Overtime for PSP is Midway's 2006 portable take on Blitz: The League, the arcade-style American football game that moved the long-running Blitz formula into a fictional professional circuit. Released in North America on December 12, 2006, it was developed and published by Midway for Sony's PlayStation Portable. The game retains the series' fast, deliberately exaggerated approach to gridiron football, with eight players on each side, 30 yards required for a first down, and no conventional penalty system or referees.
Rather than simulating every detail of professional football, Blitz: Overtime concentrates on quick play calls, rapid possessions, running, passing, tackles, and scoring drives. Players select a play and then control the ball carrier, quarterback, receiver, or defender as the action unfolds. The simplified format favors big gains and immediate action over a full eleven-player simulation. It makes the essentials easy to recognize while giving the match a distinctly arcade-oriented pace, whether building a drive through passes or trying to stop an opponent with a turnover-producing tackle.
A central mechanic is the Clash meter. Successful gains, defensive stops, touchdowns, and turnovers build the meter, which can be spent for enhanced moves. On offense, activating Clash slows the rest of the field and gives the controlled player extra time to place a pass, adjust a receiver's route, or evade a tackle. Defenders use it differently, turning it into an opportunity for especially forceful dirty hits. These actions can drain an opposing player's stamina and may cause injuries, represented with stylized X-ray cutaways rather than the rules-based fouls of a traditional football game.
Injuries also feed into the game's more adult-themed franchise management. When a player is hurt, the team can follow ordinary treatment or choose to juice the athlete in an effort to return them sooner, at greater risk. This system is part of a larger campaign in which the player creates a club, chooses its identity and key personnel, manages training, earns money through on-field performance, and improves elements of the organization. The aim is to climb from the fictional League's third division through the second and first divisions, then win its championship.
The campaign surrounds its games with an intentionally sensational story about team owners, players, rival clubs, and the pressure to win. It begins after the created team is knocked down to Division III, placing a rookie offensive player and a veteran defensive player at the center of the rebuild. The PSP version includes Bill Romanowski as the voice of Bruno Battaglia, a player added to the campaign cast. This fictional setup reflects the game’s move away from official NFL teams and players while preserving the rivalry-focused spirit associated with the Blitz series.
Blitz: Overtime also includes exhibition-style play and training challenges alongside its single-player campaign. The PSP release adds content to the earlier console game, including new campaign challenges and all-star teams drawn from the League's divisions, but it remains a portable version of Blitz: The League rather than a new sequel. Its Mature rating reflects the game's blood, violence, strong language, suggestive material, and drug references. For PSP owners, it offers an unusual mid-2000s football game: one built around fictional teams, compressed arcade rules, and a risk-reward system that makes every drive and tackle part of the larger contest.
