About

AIR PSP is Prototype's 2007 PlayStation Portable edition of Key's celebrated visual novel, originally created for PC by the Visual Arts brand in 2000. Released in Japan on November 22, 2007, this all-ages handheld version turns a long-form romance adventure into a portable story of summer, family, memory, and an enduring legend. It follows wandering performer Yukito Kunisaki, whose unusual puppet can move without strings and whose late mother charged him with finding a mysterious girl in the sky. Stranded in a quiet coastal town, he meets the openhearted Misuzu Kamio and finds a temporary home that soon becomes the center of a much larger tale.

AIR is primarily a text-driven visual novel. Players read narration and dialogue, advance through illustrated scenes and voiced performances, and occasionally select a response or action when the story branches. Early decisions guide Yukito toward the main routes associated with Misuzu, Kano Kirishima, and Minagi Tohno, so seeing the complete narrative requires revisiting the game and making different choices. The emphasis is on character conversations and carefully paced scenes rather than reflex challenges, with save data allowing players to return to earlier points when they want to pursue another outcome.

Yukito's arrival brings together a memorable group of townspeople. Misuzu is an awkward but eager schoolgirl fascinated by dinosaurs, living with her adoptive mother Haruko. Kano is energetic, inseparable from a stray dog named Potato, and preoccupied with a yellow ribbon and a childhood promise. Minagi is a quiet honors student whose time at the abandoned station with her friend Michiru hints at another private sadness. Their separate stories give the opening portion of AIR its variety, while recurring images of the sea, bright summer skies, wings, and the puppet connect the routes to Yukito's inherited search.

The story's structure expands beyond the initial heroine paths. Completing them opens the Summer section, a more linear historical episode in which the perspective shifts to Ryuuya, a guard traveling with the winged girl Kanna and her attendant Uraha. This legend supplies the background for the present-day mystery. The final Air section returns the focus to the town through Sora, a crow connected to Yukito, and develops the emotional resolution around Misuzu and Haruko. Those changing viewpoints and time periods make AIR more than a set of independent romances: its routes gradually reveal pieces of one connected story.

For the PSP conversion, Prototype presented the game with complete Japanese voice acting, including Yukito, a feature that distinguishes it from the earliest PC release. The edition also includes a capture function for saving scenes to a Memory Stick and a Memory Disc option that copies frequently accessed data to compatible storage to reduce UMD loading. These are practical handheld additions rather than a remake, while the core character art, music, branching narrative, and console-era content remain devoted to Key's original work.

AIR PSP sits early in Key's catalog, following Kanon and preceding later visual novels such as CLANNAD. Its route-based format, supernatural premise, and focus on relationships between children and parents helped establish the kind of emotionally layered storytelling associated with the studio. The game later inspired manga, music releases, and animated adaptations, but the PSP edition remains a way to experience the source narrative in its own interactive form: a summer journey in which small choices lead from everyday encounters to a centuries-spanning story of promises and hope.
