About
Gitaroo Man Lives! for PSP is a rhythm-action game developed by iNiS and published by Koei. Released in Japan in 2006 and in Europe that September, it brings the earlier PlayStation 2 adventure of Gitaroo Man to Sony’s handheld with extra multiplayer material. Its premise follows U-1, an insecure schoolboy with dreams of impressing Pico, the girl he likes. When the talking dog Puma reveals his connection to the legendary Gitaroo Man, U-1 receives the Last Gitaroo and becomes a guitar-playing defender against a succession of bizarre enemies.
The game turns musical performance into one-on-one battles. Rather than using a guitar-shaped peripheral, players use the PSP’s analogue control and face buttons to respond to visual prompts while the music plays. In the tracing sections, a moving marker follows a line across the screen: holding the indicated button and guiding the analogue control along that route produces U-1’s part. Other sections require timed presses as incoming symbols reach the target. Accuracy helps maintain U-1’s health and, in offensive exchanges, pushes the encounter forward against an opponent.
Stages are structured as songs with changing phases, so the challenge alternates between following melodic paths, defending against attacks, and delivering the final portions of an arrangement. The presentation treats each performance as a confrontation rather than a detached note chart; success and mistakes affect the musical layers as well as the on-screen duel. Completing the story leads to performance ranks and collectible character information, while higher difficulty settings offer a more demanding way to revisit the songs. The portable controls make the analogue tracing especially central to the game’s feel.
U-1’s journey moves from everyday school-life anxieties to an interplanetary conflict involving the Gravillian Empire. His opponents are deliberately theatrical, with each battle built around a different musical scenario and visual identity. The story also introduces Kirah, a warrior connected to the enemy side, and Prince Zowie, the force behind the invasion. That mixture of a shy teenager’s personal hopes, an animated superhero transformation, and science-fiction antagonists gives Gitaroo Man Lives! a notably eccentric frame for its rhythm-game action.
Gitaroo Man Lives! is an expanded PSP version rather than a separate sequel. It retains the original campaign and adds options designed for the handheld’s ad-hoc wireless play. Versus play lets participants take opposing musical roles, while the PSP-exclusive Duet mode supports cooperative performances and adds the new songs “Metal Header” and “Toda Pasión.” Duet material can also be approached solo with a computer-controlled partner, making the new content available even without a second player. Theatre, Jukebox, and collection features provide ways to revisit unlocked scenes, music, and character details outside the main run.
The game arrived during a period when rhythm titles were becoming increasingly prominent, but its design has a distinct identity: the player is not reproducing licensed songs through a plastic instrument, but navigating an original soundtrack as part of a stylized adventure. Gitaroo Man Lives! preserves that unusual blend for the PSP, pairing colourful character animation and an absurdly playful story with precise timing and analogue movement. For players exploring the system’s music games, it stands as the portable edition of iNiS’s guitar-driven battle story, with its cooperative and competitive additions marking the main differences from the PlayStation 2 release.
